December to January can be cold with snow and the summer is hot and humid. The end of March and early April is a particularly good time to visit as this is the cherry blossom season as is October for the autumn colours.

Itinerary

The Kumano Kodo Trail has for more than 1000 years been walked by Japanese pilgrim from all walks of life. We have carefully selected the most beautiful sections of the trail to hike and you will indulge in Japanese culture and tradition, understand the Sacred Shinto religion and enjoy some of the loveliest scenery while you are based in our carefully-curated accommodations.

  1. Days 1-2: Mount Koya

    Our journey begins in Mount Koya, a key spiritual centre and sacred pilgrimate site in the Kii Mountain range. You will enjoy a stay in a quaint temple accommodation while you explore the surroundings including Danjogaran, Kongobuji Temple with its beautiful rock gardens, as well as Okunoin Cemetery which serves as the final resting place of 200,000 monks. You will also get to partake in a morning prayer ritual, joining the local monks as they recite the Rishu Kyo sutra.

    Accommodation: Souji-in (1 night)

  2. Days 2-4: Kawayu

    Descending down from Mount Koya, we begin our hike along the Kumano Kodo trail. We have specifically chosen the most beautiful sections of the trail to ensure you experience the very best that this walk has to offer.

    Along the hike, you will pass through the beautiful hamlet of Chikatsuyu, forests of massive cedar woods, the 500-year-old Nonagase Cemetery and downhill to the Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine.

    At the end of each day, you will retreat to Fujiya Ryokan. The rooms are in traditional Japanese style and there are also hot spring water bubbling in the riverfront.

    Accommodation: Kawayu Onsen Fujiya Ryokan (2 nights)

  3. Days 4-5: Kumano Kodo

    The next morning, you will board a scenic traditional boat into the Hayatama Taisha, which is revered as one of the three most important shrines in Kumano Kodo. Afterwards, we continue with our hike up to the bright red Kumano Nachi Grand Shrine set at the foot of the picturesque Nachi Falls.

    At the end of the day, we retreat into the coastal town of Nachikatsuura for rest and relax.

    Accommodation: Hotel Nakanoshima (1 night)

  4. Days 5-7: Ise Peninsula, Japan

    Your journey concludes luxuriously in Amanemu, situated in the beautiful Ise Peninsula.

    Here, you will also get the chance to explore the Ise City with its quaint Futami Okitama Shrine, Ise Jingu Naiku and the Edo-era Okage-Yokocho Street. Witness the white-suit pearl divers called Ama at the Mikimoto Pearl Island, appreciate the view of the Ise-Shima Skyline from Mount Asamayama and conclude at Kongoshoji Temple.

    Ise Peninsula is also renowned for its sumptous seafood, so make sure you try some Ise lobster and abalone before you bid farewell.
