Hokkaido is a year-round destination for travellers as its distinct seasons benefit the activities you can do here. The hotter summer months of July and August are perfect for witnessing colourful meadows full of flowers. Winter peaks in January with colder temperatures than the rest of the country, but it is then that the snowy slopes are at their best for skiing. The months of April, May and June are spring-like with pleasant temperatures and long sunny days, which is great for hiking. Autumn arrives early on Hokkaido and by mid-September the famous autumn colours are once again changing the landscape.

Vast, frigid and ruggedly beautiful, Hokkaido, is a feast for the senses with its captivating scenery, delectable cuisine and natural hotsprings. Gaze upon the imposing geography of ash-spewing volcanoes and pristine national parks which celebrates the best of nature's grandeur. Let us take you to Hakodate, famous for its seafood and crabs; Lake Toya and its beautiful lake with fireworks as its backdrop by night during summer; and explore the charming seaside port town of Otaru.

  1. Fly into Hakodate

  2. Days 1-3: Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan

Arrive into Hakodate, your gateway for this itinerary and embark on a city tour of Hakodate. Explore Fort Goryokaku and Tower as well as the Trapitine Convent to witness the beautiful city by the south coast and stroll along the Motomachi District. Do not miss the panoramic night view of the city atop Mt. Hakodate, often touted as one of the world's top three night views!

Enjoy a day trip out to Matsumae the next day from Hakodate. Start with a morning market visit to immerse in the local life and watch as the locals go about their morning marketing. Try some of the local food in the morning seafood market that features more than 280 shops! Head to Matsumae, a former castle town and the sole feudal territory of Hokkaido. Wander in the town and explore Matsumae Castle before returning back to Hakodate.

Accommodation: La Vista Hakodate Bay (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-5: Lake Toya, Hokkaido, Japan

Proceed to Lake Toya by car transfer and enroute, make a stop at Onuma National Park, a bird wonderland and a diverse variety of vegetation and attractive landscapes. It is also a great stop during spring and autumn for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. Proceed to your hotel and have a leisurely soak in the onsen. During summer, you may be able to catch the daily fireworks display from your room.

There is more to discover and spend a day to explore Lake Toya and the surrounds. Take the Usuzan Ropeway for stunning views of the lake and the neighbouring Mt Usu. Drop by Lake Hill Toya and taste some of the best home-made icecream in Hokkaido that the locals recommend. Go on a horse trek through the woods in Niseko and get in touch with nature.

    Accommodation: Nonokaze Hotel (2 nights)

  4. Days 5-7: Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

The last stop of your trip is the capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo. Take a car transfer and visit Noboribetsu enroute, known as one of the most popular spa towns of Hokkaido. Make a trip to the sulphurous boiling pond, also known as the Hell Valley. Whilst here, do try the Shiraoi beef, a type of Wagyu with a deep flavour and soft meat that is bound to leave you wishing for more! Continue to Sapporo and enjoy a city tour.

Your last day in Sapporo includes a day trip to Otaru, a charming seaside port town facing the Ishikari-wan Bay. Enjoy a visit to Nikka whisky factory in Yoichi, one of Japan's top whisky makers and gain an insight into the whisky industry of Japan. You may also wish to include an optional activity of sushi making and savour your own creation for lunch. In the afternoon, take a rickshaw for a quick ride around the Warehouse district before continuing the rest of your tour of Otaru on foot.
