Photography Tour - Behind the Mask Geisha Photography (Private)
While many tourists flock to Kyoto’s Gion district in the hope of catching an opportune shot of a kimono-clad geisha, this private photography workshop gives you the chance to meet with and talk to a professional geisha, both before and after she applies her makeup. This will give you an appreciation of her character and life story, which will enhance the photographs you take of her, imbuing them with a documentary feel. The 6 hour shoot takes place in a historic house, Chionsha, which has been owned by the same family for over 100 years. Full of Japanese cultural heritage, Chionsha is the ideal setting for the geisha, who acts as a link between the traditions of the past and the modern day present. The elegant and weathered charm of the building provides a variety of backdrops against which to capture your images.
During the workshop, your professional photographer guide will give you plenty of coaching and direction in capturing the beauty and refined elegance of the geisha. Lighting and reflectors are provided, and you will learn how to set your camera and compose your shots to tell her story through your photographs. We would recommend using an SLR camera with a 24-70mm lens or a mirrorless equivalent. Alternatively, a 50mm or 85mm prime lens is a good option. A tripod will not be necessary.
