Gems of Takamatsu

Takamatsu, Shikoku, Japan

Visit Ritsurin Garden, the Japanese style garden built by the local feudal lord during the Edo Period. A truly elegant setting for a stroll, taking in the road lined by black pines and experiencing the Japanese tea ceremony culture of Sado.

It took 120 years, between 1625 and 1745, to develop the definitive layout of Ritsurin Garden. The garden consist of six ponds and thirteen landscape hills with Mt Shiun in the backdrop. Seasonal flowers and one thousand carefully maintained pine trees create gorgeous scenery that changes throughout the seasons.

The best experience to enjoy in a Japanese garden is a Japanese tea ceremony. Learn the tea culture and enjoy the tea with Japanese traditional snacks accompanied with the picturesque landscape. If you wish, you may also want to get on a traditional Japanese boat ride around the largest pond in the garden.
