Hokkaido is a year-round destination for travellers as its distinct seasons benefit the activities you can do here. The hotter summer months of July and August are perfect for witnessing colourful meadows full of flowers. Winter peaks in January with colder temperatures than the rest of the country, but it is then that the snowy slopes are at their best for skiing. The months of April, May and June are spring-like with pleasant temperatures and long sunny days, which is great for hiking. Autumn arrives early on Hokkaido and by mid-September the famous autumn colours are once again changing the landscape.

This large bustling hotel is just a 10-minute walk from Hakodate city centre and offers a range of flexible accommodation to suit various family and group sizes. The interior design has an Art Deco theme to reflect Japan’s Taisho period and guests have the choice of two restaurants. But the showstopper is the rooftop hot spring baths which offer incredible views of Hakodate Bay and are the perfect sanctuary on a cold winter’s day.
There are 350 rooms all offering en-suite bathroom with massage shower, air-conditioning, heating, Wi-Fi, fridge, coffee grinder and maker, kettle, flat-screen satellite TV and seating area. Sleeping from two to four guests, the standard rooms are compact, while larger four-guest rooms offer an additional tatami area with two futon beds. Rooms are clean, comfortable and have Art Deco influences.
There is a popular Japanese buffet breakfast and two dining options. Kai Foo Rou serves Chinese cuisine, while Casa de Torte serves European fare with a focus on seafood and Tokachi beef. The hotel’s star feature is the six rooftop onsen offering glorious views of the bay. There is also a spa and wellness centre, with wet and dry saunas and massage services. For memorable hot spring bathing, particularly during the cold winter months and during the hours of dusk as the lights are coming on over Hakodate, La Vista makes a good centrally-located choice.
