The best time to visit Oman is between November and mid-March, when the cooler air brings the mountain scenery sharply into focus and daytime temperatures average 25°C. For the rest of the year, much of Oman is oppressively hot and hazy, particularly between May and August.
Oman is one of the Arabian Peninsula’s lesser-known gems. From Muscat’s bustling souks to the endless open sands of the ever-shifting desert, the jagged mountains and the serene coast, this itinerary uncovers every element.
Start on the Indian Ocean coast with two nights at The Chedi Muscat, a tranquil retreat set between the beach and the mountains in the heart of Oman’s capital city. You might be happy just to relax and be pampered here, but we have included for you a half day guided tour of the downtown area, exploring the souks, Sultan’s Palace and Grand Mosque.
From the desert head up into the mountains to the ancient capital of Nizwa. Enjoy the astonishing views from the Alila Jabal Akhdar, and perhaps unwind there with a spa treatment or a private dinner on the cliffs after an action-packed day of sightseeing around the old town, Bahla Fort and Jabrin Castle. If you’re in Nizwa around the weekend, make sure to try out your bartering skills at the Friday Market!
From Muscat you will then take a drive into the shifting sands of the Omani desert. This is about a 5-hour trip in total, but there will be lots of time to stop for sightseeing and breaks as you go. We definitely recommend stopping off at one of the many wadis and flooded sinkholes that dot the area for a refreshing swim. Spend a night under the stars at the gorgeous Bespoke Luxury Camp site, a semi-permanent camp offering luxury under canvas. Camel riding or dune bashing can be easily arranged.
After two nights in the pristine mountain scenery, embark on the 2-3-hour drive back to Muscat for your flight to Dubai. From here you will be collected from the airport and whisked away to the Musandam Peninsula of Oman to spend your final five nights in the unparalleled Six Senses Zighy Bay. This totally secluded beachside retreat is built in the style of an Omani village and each villa has a private pool– perfect for a relaxing, luxurious end to your holiday
Half-day city tour of Muscat taking in the; Sultan Qaboos mosque, souqs, the fruit and vegetable, and fish markets.
