Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Isolated from much of India by the Western Ghats, the climate of Kerala & Karnataka is tropical and as a result of the mountain ranges the area isn’t as dry as much of India. The best time to visit is from January through to April. While there can be the occasional light showers these are just a prelude of the wet weather to come.  The monsoon season arrives in early June and thus can wash out July and August. September is much more humid as a result of the rainy season, and the fall can be dry but with the humidity this makes it feel quite the warm. There can be a little rain in the night in October and November. The temperatures cool down and the humidity lets up as winter comes in around December, with this season lasting until February when the dry spring returns.

The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon which runs from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.

February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian holiday week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts. Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.

This classic itinerary combining India and the Maldives provides a relaxed and leisurely trip through the backwaters of Kerala. Cochin’s narrow streets, winding lanes, cosmopolitan architecture, temples and antique shops can be explored for days on end. Follow this by a truly indulgent time on an idyllic island in the Maldives, with white sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

  1. Days 1-3: Cochin

Begin your journey through Kerala in Cochin where you will have two nights to start.  This fascinating town is full of colonial history and we have included in this itinerary a private tour of this cosmopolitan city taking in the Portuguese buildings and Catholic churches in Fort Cochin.

    Accommodation: Xandari Harbour (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-5: Thekkady, Kerala

From Cohin you will drive to Thekkady which will take approximately four hours and is surrounded by plantations growing pepper and cardamom making it a truly idyllic hideaway. Visit typical Keralan homes in small traditional villages and take the chance for a taste of local life.

    Accommodation: Aanavilasam (2 nights)

  3. Days 5-6: Backwaters

After two nights near Thekkady, you will then move onto the Backwaters, again by car with a four hour journey. There is no better way to experience the beauty of the Backwaters with its intricate maze of lakes, channels and lagoons than on a houseboat. Sail through the area on your own private converted rice barge. Relax for hours taking in the fascinating and laid-back day to day life of those living in and around the backwaters.

Accommodation: Houseboat Lakes and Lagoons (1 night)

  4. Days 6-8: Backwaters

Before flying over to the Maldives, spend two nights overlooking Lake Vembenad, just an hour from Cochin where you will then take a flight to Male. As the Backwaters feed into Lake Vembenad this is a great place to spend your final nights in India. On top of this, Lake Vembenad is the longest lake in India and spans several districts in Kerala and provides plenty of opportunity to spot kingfishers, cormorants, eagles and otters, making it a keen birders and wildlife enthusiasts paradise.

    Accommodation: Purity (2 nights)

  5. Days 8-13: Maldives

Finally finish your adventure in the Maldives on one of the archipelago’s romantic atolls where you will spend the next five nights. From Lake Vembenad you will drive to Cochin, taking just over an hour, before connecting to your onward direct flight. The Maldives are characterised by palm-fringed islands, stunning white beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters, as well as some of the most luxurious hotels that we know, proving the icing on the cake for your epic adventure. Spend your days with sand between your toes and checking out the incredible diving and snorkelling and by night be treated to some of the best hospitality in the world under a blanket of stars.

    Accommodation: Velassaru (5 nights)
