Botswana’s winter is May to October when the weather is hot during the day (not stiflingly hot) and cold at night. Botswana's summer months (November to April) can be hot and humid and there is a chance of rain. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between mid-December and runs through to mid-March.

Insider's View

If you travel in April, you'll enjoy seeing the annual zebra migration in the Makgadikgadi pans, the second largest migration in Africa.

It's possible to transfer between your safari camps by helicopter instead of light aircraft - we highly recommend it for a totally different experience!

Itinerary

This thrill seekers safari through Botswana is perfect for families with teenagers. With activities galore, the whole family will get out and about on an active exploration of some of the most incredible and scenic areas that Botswana has to offer. Watch wildlife from a game vehicle or on foot and gallop on horseback through the beautifully eerie Makgadikgadi Pans before rounding off your adventure at the mighty Victoria Falls for a grand finale.

  1. Fly to Maun

  2. Days 1-4: Makgadikgadi Pans

Your family adventure begins as you are flown by light aircraft from Maun into the vast moonscape of the Makgadikgadi Pans. Here you will enjoy a wealth of exciting activities which the whole family will enjoy. Spend the next three days exploring the wonders of the salt pans by quad bike or even by horse-back on a two-hour excursion. The landscape here couldn't be more different to the earlier parts of your safari, and the wildlife is too. Spend time with a meerkat colony (who may climb on your head to use you as a vantage point), ride to the vast upside-down-shaped Chapman's baobab tree, visited by early explorers including Livingstone, and learn about the hunter gatherer Zu'hoasi people, a relation of the San bushmen. End each evening under a canopy of sparkling stars across the clear night sky.

    Accommodation: Camp Kalahari (3 nights)

  3. Days 4-7: Shinde Concession

Your next stop in Botswana takes you north in a light aircraft to the Shinde Private Concession in the Selinda Concession in the north of the Okavango Delta where you will spend the next 3 nights at Footsteps camp on the Young Explorers safari.

With exclusive-use of the camp, day-by-day and activities are tailor-made around you. Specially designed to keep the kids entertained, activities allow the whole family to get out and explore the wilderness on a flexible schedule with guides who are highly experienced in working with children. Activities vary from exploring on foot to find animal tracks and spoor, to heading out in a vehicle to find some big game.

    Accommodation: Footsteps (3 nights)

  4. Days 7-10: Victoria Falls - the Zim side

Your journey concludes in Zimbabwe at the spectacular Victoria Falls. Stay outside of Victoria Falls town for a tranquil stay along the banks of the Zambezi river. Here you are close enough to head into the Falls to experience the true force of the water, as well as being in a slightly more peaceful area to enjoy lazy afternoons if you wish. During your three nights stay we also recommend you head out on a game vehicle for a safari in Zambezi National Park where you could find elephants eating in the bush and lions stretching out for an afternoon sleep. If you haven’t had your fill of water-based activities, you can get back out on the water on a boat cruise or in a canoe to see game from a completely different angle. We think this is the perfect way to round off an action-packed safari holiday.

Accommodation: Victoria Falls River Lodge (3 nights)

  5. Fly home from Victoria Falls

Experiences

  • Helicopter Flight over Victoria Falls

Take a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls to witness one of the seven wonders of the natural world from the air. A flight over the falls gives a dramatic perspective of the largest sheet of falling water in the world.

  • Horse riding safari from Jack's Camp, Makgadikgadi Pans

Horse riding in the Makgadikgadi Pans with Ride Botswana is an incredible way to explore this unique landscape, cantering across the chalky white pans. Staying at Jack's Camp each night ensures a good dose of comfort after a day in the saddle, too.

  • Meerkats on the Makgadikgadi

Down in the Makgadikgadi Pans, and accessible from both Jack's and San Camp, is a very special, habituated clan of meerkats, which have been studied by scientists for years. Guests to Jack's and San are able to visit and observe quietly.

  • Mokoro trips in Botswana

Botswana's northern safari areas are full of water channels just waiting to be explored. Larger boats can be used to explore the wider channels but for the aficionado, mokoro trips into the smaller channels are a real treat. Always subject to waterlevels

  • Victoria Falls National Park

Take in the falls in all their glory with a walk through the Victoria Falls National Park. It is recommended to view the falls from the Zimbabwean side as you can enjoy extensive views of the falls as you wind your way along the pathways.

  • Victoria Falls Traditional Craft Market

After a trip round the Victoria Falls National Park, stop off at the traditional craft village. Here you will see the locals performing traditional skills such as basket weaving, jewellery making and ornament carving.
