It's nice to visit Germany and Austria year-round. The Christmas markets are particularly fun and great for getting into the festive spirit. The cities look particularly beautiful in spring and summer, and some of the best weather for sight-seeing can be had in autumn, when days are generally mild and clear.

This is the ultimate private luxury tour of Southern Germany and Austria. Stay in style at the region's finest hotels and enjoy the opportunity to see some of the most stunning cities in Europe, along with beautiful vista of the Alps and the Black Forest.

This suggested itinerary gives the traveller the opportunity to discover the very best the region has to offer: historic cities, beautiful landscapes, excellent luxury hotels and superb food and drink. It is possible to undertake a trip like this at any time of the year: during the summer you may wish to spend more time enjoying the sunny weather in the Black Forest or the Austrian Alps; in winter it might be worth spending some extra time in the cities to enjoy Christmas Markets.

This suggested itinerary starts at the charming spa town of Baden-Baden, the gateway to the Black Forest. For guests arriving through Frankfurt airport (this is the closest international hub) we'd recommend a private guided tour of Heidelberg on the way: this is one of Germany's most beautiful and historic cities, overlooked by a spectacular ruined castle, it is central Europe's oldest university town, and is well worth a visit if you're driving south from Frankfurt. We can also arrange an extension to this tour in the city of Frankfurt if desired. Baden-Baden itself is an elegant resort town, well known for its top end hotels, excellent restaurants and the spa resorts fuelled by health-giving properties of the region's natural springs. Here you can enjoy some free time relaxing and getting to know the city's parks, museums, and galleries, or take an excursion over the border to visit the French Alsatian cities of Strasbourg and Colmar.

From Baden-Baden it's a drive of three-and-a-quarter hours to the city of Munich.

Munich is the capital of the region of Bavaria and the most important city in Southern Germany. The centre of the city is Marienplatz, where the ornate Glockenspiel set into the wall of the city hall chimes the hours as its life-size mechanical figures twirl and play. Munich is home to several former royal residences of the Bavarian royal family, including the Residenz and the stunning Nymphenburg Palace and Gardens. The centrally located Viktualienmarkt is the city's best known outdoor food market, ideal for a stop for a beer and sausage break after a long morning's sightseeing! Either on the way to or from Munich, or as a separate day trip if you have time, we can arrange a guided visit for you to the magnificent castle at Neuschwanstein, the turreted fairytale castle built by King Ludwig II which became the inspiration for the Disney Sleeping Beauty castle.

From Munich it's a short drive to the Alps, where you'll be based in the charming small city of Salzburg. Overlooked by its spectacular mountain fortress, this picturesque city is full of charm. Here you can explore the city and see the birthplace of Mozart, or head out into the breathtaking lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut.

The final stop on this itinerary is in the Imperial capital of Vienna. Here you'll see magnificent palaces, stately opera houses, and cosy coffee boutiques. A centre for classical music and art, you can enjoy the ballet or opera here, and attend a concert by the renowned Vienna Boys' Choir or a performance by the Lipizzaner horses at the Spanish Riding School.
