Vardzia Cave Town & Khertvisi Fortress
Today's journey brings you past arid and stone-terraced landscapes through the 10th century Khertvisi Fortress, one of Georgia's oldest fortresses, before you get to Vardzia.
Linked to the beloved Queen Tamar who was crowned as co-ruler by her father Giorgi III, the cave town was founded by her during the 12th century. Vardzia cave town became one of the most prominent cultural centres in Georgia. The most striking feature of Vardzia is its monastery with remarkarbly-preserved frescoes depicting Queen Tamar.
