The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.
February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian holiday week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.
Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.
Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.
The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.
COMO Maalifushi is the first luxury resort in the Maldives to open in the pristine Thaa Atoll in the archipelago’s southwest. With 65 exquisite over-water villas and garden suites, Maalifushi is the ultimate private island escape.
Located in the sparkling turquoise waters of Thaa Atoll, Maalifushi offers a mix of 65 exquisite villas and suites, both on land and over-water.
The island is a nature lover's paradise. Thick jungle gives the resort a real tropical island feel, and wildlife is never far away, with fascinating crabs that dig holes in the sand, fruit bats that hang in the trees, or majestic rays that traverse the house reef and coral gardens.
In contrast to the jungle exterior, the villas and suites are luxurious, beautifully comfortable and very spacious. Each villa and suite enjoys its own private pool and decking area. The over-water accommodation offers spectacular open views across the ocean, whereas the beach based rooms have a line of vegetation in front with a small path leading through to the shore, creating additional privacy.
There are good accommodation options for families, with a two-bedroom Family Beach Suite and two two-bedroom Family Beach Villas on land. For families looking for something extra special, the over-water COMO Villas provide an incredible amount of space. Spread out over 4,392 square feet, these two-bedroom villas boast a large private pool, a kitchen, an enormous living area, as well as plenty of outdoor seating spots to enjoy the stunning views.
As well as the excellent family accommodation, the resort also has a fantastic Kids Club which has both indoor and outdoor play areas. For older children, there is a games room with TVs and a pool table.
The island offers guests three dining options; Madi, the all-day dining restaurant where international cuisine is given a Maldivian twist and 'Tai', a Japanese-inspired restaurant serving sashimi and sushi. 'Thila' pool and lounge bar also serves light meals, woodfired oven-baked pizzas and ice cream.
Maalifushi is also home to an award winning Shambhala Spa offering holistic, Asian-inspired treatments including signature massages, facials and Ayurveda. The eight treatment rooms are set over-water and are delightfully light and airy. The spa also offers complimentary yoga each day and has indoor and outdoor pavilions.
There is also a large range of exciting excursions and activities available including fishing. The resort is host to a Tropicsurf centre; the world-renowned surf school. There is also excellent diving, and as the Thaa Atoll is relatively uncharted, visitors to Maalifushi could be some of the first to explore new dive sites.
Snorkelling, kayaking and paddle-boarding are all complimentary, and there are also three complimentary snorkelling boat trips per week. Water-skiing, wake-boarding and tube rides can be arranged at the dive centre, as well as a number of fun boat trips, including sunset dolphin cruises, sunset line fishing and game fishing. This means you can be as active or relaxed as you like during your stay, and there is something to enjoy for everyone.

I absolutely loved the contrast between the thick jungle on the island and the smart, luxurious villas and suites tucked away amongst the foliage, or out across the water.
That every villa and suite has its own private decking and pool is a lovely bonus. The different locations of the accommodation means that you can choose what kind of experience you would like to have; the on land accommodation is very private, and it definitely feels exotic being surrounded by jungle, whereas the over-water villas and suites have amazing views and so much light.
The beds are really comfortable and the bathrooms are amazing - the sunken bathtubs are enormous! It is maybe worth being aware that due to the jungle setting, mosquito repellent is sprayed around the resort in the early morning and early evening, and so it is probably worth avoiding the outdoor shower at these times!
The food was delicious, and I particularly enjoyed the breakfast specials each morning.
The over-water spa treatment rooms are so spacious, and unlike in a lot of spas, they feel very light and airy. The Shambhala Signature Massage was just divine and I would definitely recommend it for anyone needing to unwind.
There is so much nature on and around the island, it really does feel like a tropical island experience. The ocean and surrounding coral are teeming with beautiful fish. A particularly memorable experience was coming back from snorkelling in the early evening and seeing two big rays swim by, then lifting my head above the water to watch the beautiful sunset and fruit bats fly from the trees.

One of the latest islands to open in the Maldives located in a virtually uncharted atoll making the snorkelling and diving excellent. The island is great for adults and families. Even though it takes slightly longer to get to with a domestic flight followed by a speedboat, this really does make you feel as though you are you in the Maldives as some of the islands slightly closer to Male have more water/air traffic passing by. If you want to experience two islands then think about going to Cocoa Island, the sister resort so you can experience the COMO service at both places.
