The White Ring, Arlberg, Austria
Ski the White Ring - one of the most famous Alpine challenges there is.
The White Ring circuit was born in 1940 with the building of the lift system around Lech and Zurs. 22km long and around 5,500m of altitude difference, it's a real test of stamina. Starting on the Rüfikopf, the course goes to Zürs, continues over the demanding Madloch descent to Zug and then back to Lech. In 2006, the Olympic and World Champion Patrick Ortlieb declared the inaugural White Ring race, which has since become a cult event in January each year. Around 1000 skiers compete, with the fastest ones finishing in around 45 minutes. A great entertainment program is held in Lech and Zurs on the eve of the race with the White Party, followed by White Night which is celebrated on the night after the race.
You don't have to compete to enjoy this circuit. Every Sunday, the guides of the Lech ski school provide straightforward guidance for the area, and you can hire a private guide to take you round.
