Periyar - Boating at Lake Periyar
Periyar National Park, Kerala
Boating in the splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar river adds to the charm of the park. Spot some fascinating wildlife from the boat including animals coming to drink on the lake.
This is the only sanctuary in India where you have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat. There is a chance to see the herds of wild elephants which come down to the lake for water. Other possible sightings include gaur, sambar deer, wild baor, the Nilgiri Tahr, lion tailed mazaque, malabar squirrel, tiger, jungle cat, and a sloth bear. Bird sightings include hornbill, stork, woodpecker and a kingfisher.
Please note there are five different trips you can go on during the day, each lasting around two hours. We recommend you opt for an early morning or late evening excursion when the weather is cooler and lake at its most beautiful.
