Fatehpur Sikri

Agra, Delhi and the North, India

Situated 37 km (23 miles) south west of Agra, the ‘lost city’ of Fatehpur Sikri is the abandoned capital of the great Mughal emperor Akbar.

Built between 1569 - 1585 and designed to be the joint capital of the Mughal Empire with Agra, this impressive red sandstone city was only occupied for fourteen years before its poor water supply forced the Mughals to abandon it. Now deserted and fantastically preserved, Fatehpur Sikri’s fusion of Islamic and Hindu architecture are a testament to Mughul power and grandeur.
