Exclusive access pre-opening tour of The Book of Kells

Dublin

This pre-opening tour of Trinity College offers an exclusive opportunity to view the priceless ‘Book of Kells’ and explore the Old Library with its extensive collection of rare and ancient books.

Founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592 on the site of an Augustinian monastery, Trinity College is home to the famed Book of Kells which you’ll have the chance to view as part of this 45-minute tour. This intricately decorated manuscript contains four Latin gospels thought to have been written by monks who fled Iona to Kells around 800AD after a Viking raid. You’ll then have time to stroll the hallowed halls of the Old Library, into the grand main chamber whose 65-metre long walls are filled with 200,000 rare and ancient books, watched over by the marble busts of philosophers and scribes. The chamber also houses the Brian Boru harp, one of just three Gaelic harps that remain in existence.

Please note the Book of Kells will be removed from public display from November 2019 to March 2020 and a full colour replica will be displayed during this time.
