Anuradhapura dates from the sixth century BC and is one of Buddhism's holiest sites, containing the 2,200 year old Sri Maha Bodhi tree, grown from a cutting of the Indian tree beneath which Buddha found Enlightenment.
With stepped pools and bell-shaped stupas, or dagobas which can be as much as 340 metres wide and 60 metres high, Anuradhapura has much to offer. It was founded in the sixth century BC in and was once a great planned city with palaces, cemeteries, and monasteries all within its walls. It was the capital for 1,300 years from 377BC. The Archaeological Museum contains a number of superb artifacts.
