Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The best time to visit Ethiopia is from mid to late October until May. During this time the highlands are ideal for hiking especially after the rainy season has just finished as the landscape bursts into life.

Due to the high altitude of the country in comparison to its location conditions get quite cool at night. Temperatures generally can reach above 30°C in lowland areas, whereas the highland temperature can dip below 20°C. Addis Ababa has a relatively even temperature year-round.

Tukul Village hotel opened in 2007, a settlement of cone-shaped mud huts based on homes normally found in eastern and north eastern Africa. Accommodation with a boutique but authentic feel located close to the Churches of Lalibela, northern Ethiopia.

Tukul Village hotel opened in 2007, a settlement of cone shaped mud huts which are based on homes normally found in eastern and north eastern Africa. Their relatively unassuming decor only emphasises the superlative beauty that awaits you on walking out onto your balcony.

We recommend a minimum of two nights in order to see the main 11 churches, slightly longer to really explore and visit some of the more inaccessible ones. The entrance fee to see the churches is used to help create a better standard of living for the poorest people in the area. The church provides shelter for the disabled and so decreases the amount of begging in the area.

We do recommend you get out and about as this is what most guests will be doing so the hotel will be deserted. But then why would you not want to explore this historically fascinating and awe inspiring area of Ethiopia?

In comparison to our other Lalibela property, Mountain View Hotel, Tukul Village has smaller, slightly more pleasant rooms with a boutique feel and floor-to-ceiling windows letting in plenty of natural light. For a more authentic experience there is a mainly Ethiopian menu and locally sourced art is displayed in the bedrooms. However the views, in our opinion, are not as good as Mountain View, giving both their advantages. There are currently six split-level tukul huts in the village, offering 12 rooms and a further 12 are currently under construction.

There are 24 rooms available at Tukul Village Hotel. Each has a balcony and shower but not a bath. You can occupy either a double room, twin room or single room. However the hotel can also accommodate families and facilitate three people in one room. All rooms are occupied on a bed and breakfast basis. We recommend requesting upstairs rooms as they have a better view.

There are currently no child care facilities in place at Tukul Village Hotel, but rooms can be arranged to accommodate families. However it should be noted that there are balconies at Tukul Village Hotel.

  • Rooms are on a bed and breakfast basis
  • No pool

The hotel is equipped for arranging all tours in and around Lalibela and provide guides who speak English, French and German. The hotel is close to the ancient rock-hewn churches such as that of St. George, making it a great base to explore them. There are 11 rock churches in Lalibela and 800 Priests and Deacons to witness. Mules can be used to reach the more inaccessible churches. There is also a museum nearby and a local school which can be visited.

For those who love bird-watching there are many species to witness flying above the hotel such as kites, ravens, falcons and the Lammergayer (bearded vulture).

Louisa Verney (Staff)

I really like the Tukul Village as the round rooms were all covered in bougainvillea and were all well finished and laid out. In my opinion they are the nicest rooms in Lalibela, however the hotel does not have the same spectacular views that The Mountain View Hotel has, which is a shame. Having said that if you have a room on the first floor the view is better than from the ground floor.
