Best time to Visit
Good time to visit
Average time to visit
The best time to visit Ethiopia is from mid to late October until May. During this time the highlands are ideal for hiking especially after the rainy season has just finished as the landscape bursts into life.
Due to the high altitude of the country in comparison to its location conditions get quite cool at night. Temperatures generally can reach above 30°C in lowland areas, whereas the highland temperature can dip below 20°C. Addis Ababa has a relatively even temperature year-round.

Description
The Sabean International Hotel is located perfectly for a visit to Ethiopia's oldest and holiest city. A great base with a modern feel, ideal from which to spend a couple of days exploring the archaeology and history of the Axum area.
The Sabean International Hotel is located on the main road in the tiny town of Axum, a good location from which to see the archaeological sites here such as the ancient stele and witness parishioners dressed in white. Axum is the oldest and holiest town in Ethiopia and once home to the ancient Axemite people, thought to be akin to the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. It is a fascinating town which boasts ruins, Axumite villas, churches, the Ark of the Covenant and a meeting point between trade from east Africa and the Mediterranean sea.
The hotel itself, is the best place to stay in Axum, but unfortunately it doesn't have a view. There are over 40 rooms at the hotel and four suites, we would recommend avoiding the floor where reception is located as the television is based there.
However, with so much to see on your doorstep in the one or two nights we recommend, time spent here will be minimal. This hotel is new, clean and the Ethiopian take on being modern.
Accommodation
There are 44 rooms comprising four suites, 28 twin rooms and 12 doubles. All are en-suite with a shower but no bath and decorated to an Ethiopian luxury standard. We recommend avoiding the first floor as there is a television in the reception area and the sound does travel to the rooms on this floor.

Facilities
There isn't a swimming pool or air conditioning at The Sabean International Hotel but all rooms have satellite television and there is WiFi at reception. There is also an ATM just outside the main door to the hotel. Board at the hotel is on a bed and breakfast basis but other meals are served at the hotel's restaurant.
Activities
Visiting the obelisk and archaeological sites of Axum and immersing yourself in the history of this fascinating country.
Reviews
Louisa Verney (Staff)
The Sabean, is maybe best described as the best option of a very mediocre collection of hotels in Axum. I think it is best to describe the interiors as what the Ethiopian owners think tourists want, with some slightly interesting shiny nylon curtains and bedspreads and a love of gold!! But as a base to explore the archaeological ruins and churches of Axum it is well located on the main street so everywhere you want to visit is just a short drive away.
