Average time to visit
The best time to visit Ethiopia is from mid to late October until May. During this time the highlands are ideal for hiking especially after the rainy season has just finished as the landscape bursts into life.
Due to the high altitude of the country in comparison to its location conditions get quite cool at night. Temperatures generally can reach above 30°C in lowland areas, whereas the highland temperature can dip below 20°C. Addis Ababa has a relatively even temperature year-round.

The fascinating rock hewn churches of Lalibela are an essential venture when visiting Ethiopia. After a day of exploring, The Mountain View Hotel's balconies are a great place to rest with a sundowner and Lalibela's amazing views.
Located at an altitude of 2680 metres, the views from Mountain View Hotel over the Lasta Lalibela mountain chains are simply breath-taking. Your surrounding landscape can be viewed in panorama from the hotel's balconies and through the plentiful windows that make up its stone-and-glass design, a homage to the rock hewn churches of Lalibela.
Built by Getachew and Metaso, two former guides, in 2008, the thirty room Mountain View Hotel is located a 15-minute walk from the town of Lalibela. This relative isolation in comparison to other accommodation is easily overcome on foot or by vehicle in no time and for some a situation such as this, may be preferable.
The Jamaican head chef at Mountain View will indulge you in both European and local cuisines during your stay. All rooms at the hotel are of the same standard, a comfortable and contemporary en-suite arrangement that is possibly the best presented of the privately owned wider Lalibela area lodges.
There is the option of a double or a twin bedded room. Each room has an en-suite with a shower over a bath and are comfortable, functional and clean. Whilst the view inside may not be astounding, each room comes with a balcony for a view which more than makes up for it.
There are currently no child care facilities at this property.
Food at the Mountain View Hotel is more buffet than a la carte but receives good feedback. There isn't a pool here but the roof terrace is the place to be for views and to do a spot of bird watching. The hotel also has WiFi for guests.

Louisa Verney (Staff)
The Mountain View Hotel is in the most amazing position at the edge of Lalibela. I loved being able to sit on my balcony and look out over the dramatic arid landscape. The hotel is a wonderful base from which to go out and explore the incredible rock churches.
As with most of the hotels in Ethiopia the rooms all just felt a bit tired, and lacking any form of interior design and those little touches, even though the hotel is new. But the rooms were clean and comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful.
