Itinerary

Reach the most remote corners of the vast state of Alaska as you soar over dramatic mountain scenery by private bush plane, staying at the absolute best of Alaskan lodges, all of which occupy truly jaw-dropping locations. This is Alaska at its finest.

  1. Days 1-2: Anchorage

Fly into Anchorage to begin your journey and overnight before your adventure begins.

Accommodation: Hotel Captain Cook (1 night)

  2. Days 2-5: Kenai Peninsula

The next morning, set off by private floatplane to the beautiful Tutka Bay Lodge. Sheltered in Kachemak Bay by forested mountains and picturesque fjordland, Tutka Bay offers a chance to experience a more local side to Alaska. This family-run lodge is the perfect place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and sample some amazing fishing, kayak alongside whales and sea otters and hike the surrounding trails, simply enjoying the peace of the peninsula. Tutka Bay also runs a highly-acclaimed cookery school - learn to make traditional Alaskan cuisine using freshly caught ingredients or simply reap the rewards at meal times, tucking into delicious dinners made by the highly trained team at the lodge.

Accommodation: Tutka Bay Lodge (3 nights)

  3. Days 5-8: Denali and Alaskan Wilderness

From Tutka Bay you will fly north to Winterlake Lodge, the sister property of Tutka Bay which offers the same attentive service, homely atmosphere and activities to suit all tastes. The flight over takes about 70 minutes and will sweep you past mountains and forests to enjoy enviable views before landing on the water right in front of the lodge. A stay here includes guided hiking, kayaking and nature walks as well as at least one helicopter excursion, making it easy to reach nearby glaciers and ridges, fishing hubs and picnic spots where you are unlikely to see another soul for miles. Go on the lookout for bears and moose, raft along the Happy River or even try your hand at dogsledding for something truly Alaskan.

    Accommodation: Winterlake Lodge (3 nights)

  4. Days 8-12: Denali and Alaskan Wilderness

Following three nights here you will return by float plane to Anchorage and change into your small bush plane, this time heading east to McCarthy, the entry-point into Wrangell St.Elias National Park.

Wrangell St. Elias is the size of Switzerland and due to its inaccessibility, it remains largely undiscovered. Staff from Ultima Thule will greet you in McCarthy and fly you to the lodge in their very own bi-planes, starting you off on your adventure. Prepare to explore areas of the park where literally no-one has set foot before as you soar over mind-blowing landscapes; dazzling blue pools contrast with the white of the glaciers and fields of blueberries extend in the shadows of the jagged mountain ranges. Everything is completely customisable during your stay and excursions are weather-dependent to ensure safety as you fly from location to location, hiking, picnicking, rafting and fishing to your heart's content, accompanied by your personal guide. Guides at the lodge have been flying for years and know the park like the back of their hands so whatever the weather they can plan accordingly and ensure your stay is unforgettable.

    Accommodation: Ultima Thule (4 nights)

  5. Days 12-13: Anchorage

After four nights in this magical place, return to Anchorage via McCarthy for a final night before flying back home.

Accommodation: Hotel Captain Cook (1 night)

Experiences

  • A day at Ultima Thule

Ultima Thule's daily adventure tours have no itinerary. When you wake and make your way to the main lodge, the Claus family and pilots are already studying the skies. The family and their experienced wilderness guides will help you create the perfect day.

  • Bear Viewing in Katmai National Park

This excursion provides an amazing opportunity to explore the most populated wild habitat of Alaskan brown bears. Fly from Homer over to Katmai National Park for a once in a lifetime experience of bear viewing in beautiful surroundings.

  • Fishing in Kachemak Bay

Spend the day fishing for salmon and halibut at Tutka Bay, alongside informative local captains with all gear included. The largest halibut in the world was caught in Alaska!

  • Flight Safari at Ultima Thule

Although Alaska contains the largest protected wilderness on earth, most adventurers never get past crowded Denali. A flight safari with Ultima Thule will open your eyes to true wilderness, landing in wild places hundreds of miles from any other person.

  • Wilderness Hiking at Ultima Thule

With the Ultima Thule pilots and guides, you can push beyond the edges of your map and tread ‘paths’ (although much of this national park has no trails), where no other traveller has trodden.

  • Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Incredible Wrangell St. Elias National Park is the size of Switzerland and the second largest national park in the world – Plenty of space for visitors to escape the crowds, go where nature leads them and enjoy the vastness!

  • Yoga, spa and wellness at Tutka Bay

As well as the award-winning cuisine and lodge amenities, a stay at Tutka Bay includes a complimentary massage for each guest, daily yoga and afternoon wine tastings for relaxation and rejuvenation.
