Jing's Residence

  • Made famous by Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s film 'Raise the Red Lantern', Pingyao is one of China’s last remaining ancient walled cities

  • Jing’s Residence combines creature comforts with the simple elegance of traditional Chinese architecture

  • The Dining room at Jing's dishes up delicious international and regional cuisine

  • Try your hand at noodle making - an artisan craft here in Pingyao

Part of the Relaix and Châteaux collection, Jing's Residence is a small boutique hotel located in a stunning, renovated old mansion blending in harmoniously with the traditional walled city of Pingyao, just a short flight from Beijing.

The Residence is ideally located in the heart of the old town and encompasses a series of grey-brick pavilions built around a set of four courtyards. Tables and chairs are located outside each pavilion where guests can relax while reading, drinking tea, or soaking up the historical atmosphere.

In addition to the luxurious accommodation, the Residence also features a dining room where guests can enjoy an extensive menu of international and local favourites. The Residence provides a cosy library and a bar that make it the perfect home-away-from-home for discerning travellers.

Unobtrusive landscaping features bamboo, a water element, white stones from northern China and traditional brick-paved walkways that connect the various courtyards. The dramatic lighting at night enhances the courtyard's almost palpable sense of time and history.

The ancient walled city of Pingyao, located in Shanxi Province, was established some 2,700 years ago. It hosts some of the best-preserved traditional architecture in China and mostly stands as it was during its heydays in the late Ming and Qing dynasties. It has been listed since 1997 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Top tip:

Pingyao is probably the only city in China with such a well preserved city wall - in some ways it is a living museum.
