The Skitox

In our humble opinion, Sundays are better on the slopes. Whether it be with friends or family, an active holiday in the Alps makes for a fantastic getaway and the ultimate reboot after the long winter months.

Website Assistant, Stephanie, returns feeling rejuvenated after a weekend in the poster boy of all ski chalets, Husky.

‘Tis the season for wanderlust. With the magic of Christmas far behind us and the novelty of chilly February days wearing thin, many look to far-flung, sun-soaked destinations to escape winter’s icy grip. For me though, there is simply nothing better than embracing the colder climes and heading to the slopes for a serious dose of ski.

Filling your lungs with fresh mountain air, your days with back-to-back blue skies and your plate with endless servings of Savoyarde fare is an unbeatable way to dust off the cobwebs and leave you feeling remarkably refreshed and revitalised, despite the bleak mid-winter.

A long weekend or a leisurely week in the Alps is unbeatable for families, perfect for couples and second to none for a group of friends. And when it comes to resorts, Val d’Isère ticks the boxes for all three. Bursting with alpine charm, brilliant restaurants, buzzing bars and miles of pristine piste to explore, this quaint little village is hard to top. Gateway to the reds, blues and blacks of the trois vallées, Val is also home to an Explorers Kids Club and a handful of Scott Dunn chalets, confirming it as the ideal ski spot for young and old alike.

Tucked away in an unassuming nook of the resort is Husky, arguably the finest of all ski chalets in the resort. Only a stone’s throw from the piste, yet a world away from reality, Husky is a heavyweight when it comes to opulence. There, décor takes centre stage and even the banal is totally bonkers. Expertly combining the traditional with the contemporary, the chalet is a masterpiece of design where rustic relaxation seamlessly meets a world of quirky lampshades, patchwork denim and technicolour lighting. Where else could you try your hand at archery, scramble up a climbing wall and indulge in a massage all before breakfast?

For you and thirteen of your nearest and dearest, it is an unbeatable ski splurge destination. Complete with Scott Dunn flagship chalet service, gourmet dinners, pairing wines and a private driver service, no stone has been left unturned when it comes to comfort and quite frankly there is little reason to leave the chalet. If it weren’t for bluebird days, an unprecedented dumping of snow and a hankering to get out on the slopes, I would have hunkered down there for the entirety of my stay.

Our chef, Simon, was utterly brilliant. Conjuring up dish after mouthwatering dish of delicious cuisine whilst effortlessly navigating his way around a minefield of dietary requirements and postponed dinner times (presumably only too familiar with guests’ reluctance to get out of the hot tub). The food was fresh, hearty and exquisitely presented, created using local ingredients yet with flavours from all over the world. From breakfast ’til bedtime, we were treated to world class cuisine, all whipped up in a quiet corner of Val d’Isère.

All good things come to an end and so, feeling noticeably refreshed, we waved goodbye to Husky and wound our way back down the mountain, homeward (and reality) bound. A short stint in the mountains had proved the perfect antidote to the winter blues and the ultimate way to recharge mind, body and soul, lampshades and all.
