Akawanka Lodge
At Akawanka Lodge, the manager is also the artist in residence and as such, the place bursts with character and colour. Couple these beautiful interiors with sweeping views over verdant hills and the result is a delightful base for a stay in San Agustin.
-
Set amongst rolling green countryside, this rustic lodge epitomises the laidback vibe of the charming village at the bottom of the hill, so you can easily absorb the local lifestyle and enjoy the views
-
Expect quirky decorations (the owner is also an artist) and well-maintained gardens full of flowering plants and visited by numerous birds throughout the day
-
Just a short walk downhill (we recommend a taxi back up) you’ll find a pretty little town with cobbled streets and a cute main square with cafes and places to eat lunch or dinner
-
Enjoy hearty traditional breakfasts out on the open terrace, usually consisting of fresh fruits, eggs and fried plantain and always accompanied by plenty of rich locally grown coffee (although their unique tea concoction is worth trying too)
Perhaps not the most luxury property in the area, Akawanka stands out amongst the rest thanks to the care and detail with which it has been lovingly decorated by its owners and manager. The result is walls, furniture and doors painted in sprawling quirky and intricate designs that infuse the lodge with character and colour, matched only by the gardens filled with flowers and birds.
Rooms and bathrooms are simple yet comfortable and depending on the room category you opt for, you may enjoy a wrap-around terrace, private terrace or even jacuzzi. Breakfast is served at Akawanka’s on-site restaurant (the menu is translated into English), WiFi is available throughout the property and there is an on-site massage room available for bookings. Upon arrival, you’ll be offered a coffee or an aromatic tea. Whilst you may think when in Colombia, you should go for coffee, we actually recommend the tea - it’s a fragrant glass of berries, flowers and herbs freshly picked from the garden.
The lodge is situated just a 15-minute walk from the centre of town so well located for those who want some peace and quiet but also the option to wander down and explore. We would recommend taking a taxi back up afterwards, however, as the road is steep and not yet paved.
Please note that English is limited at the hotel and so it is advisable to book at least your first tour in advance and then arrange any subsequent activities with your English-speaking guide on arrival.
