China has four distinct seasons - a pleasant warm spring, a hot rainy summer, a comfortable cool autumn and a cold winter. The hottest time in China comes in July and August and the coldest time is from the late January to early February. The spring from March to May is recommended as the best time to travel to China.

This compact itinerary provides a great introduction to China, from the incredible city of Beijing full of mystery and culture to the fast paced modern side of China in Shanghai where you can truly see east meeting west.

  1. Days 1-4: Beijing

Beijing is a fascinating city and on arrival in China you will have three nights here to soak in the centuries of history and culture. With your private guide and driver, over your full two days in the city you have the chance to take in all the highlights including the monumental Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. In contrast, Beihai Lake and Houhai Lake, encircled by Hutongs provide a much more personal view of Beijing with their charming courtyards and pedestrianised streets.

Of course no visit to Beijing would be complete without travelling out of the city to The Great Wall of China, which reaches from Ancient Manchuria to the Gobi Desert. We suggest visiting the Mutianyu section of the wall early in the morning to capture the best photographs of the wall with the beautiful light and less tourists visiting at this time. We would also definitely recommend visiting the Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven which are both fantastic examples of traditional architecture. The Temple of Heaven's surrounding grounds are also a brilliant spot for people watching with people coming daily to practice Tai Qi, meditation, tango, gymnastics, square dancing and other forms of physical exercise.

Accommodation: The Park Plaza (3 nights)

  2. Days 4-7: Shanghai

After enjoying a morning exploring Beijing you will transfer to the airport in time for your short flight to Shanghai where you will have three nights to explore this vibrant metropolis. Like in Beijing, we have included a private guide and driver for you to make the most out of your time in Shanghai. In contrast to Beijing which offers some incredible ancient history highlights, Shanghai is fast paced and provides a fantastic insight into modern China, where east meets west.

Explore the lively French Concession and vibrant Xintiandi district, mazes of little boutiques, fantastic restaurants and authentic art galleries before spending some time on Nanjing Road, the main shopping district in the city which really showcases Shanghai today.

Shanghai is full of incredible restaurants and we can be sure to point you in the right direct in terms of the best dining destinations in the city. Equally Shanghai has some fantastic evening shows and we very much recommend taking in an ERA show, combining Chinese acrobatics and modern technology into a truly spectacular show.

With three days in Shanghai, we have included one day spent outside of the city in Suzhou, known for it interlaced canals and beautiful old town. As you explore the cobbled streets you will easily see why it is called the Venice of China. We really like Sozhou and think that it is a great inclusion to give you a small taste of a slightly more rural China on your compact itineary.

Accommodation: The Westin Bund Shanghai (3 nights)
