Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Xian and the surrounding regions experience four distinct seasons and a continental climate. Summers are hot and humid, with maximum temperatures often above 40°C, however the monsoon season brings plenty of rainfall to temper the scorching heat. Winters are cool and dry, and not unpleasant for exploring the sights of the region, but cold weather clothing and layers are advisable as temperatures drop to freezing. Spring is pleasantly warm, with gentle breezes and long sunny days, making March through to May the best times to visit Xian. Autumn temperatures are similarly mild; however, September and October often bring frequent rain showers.

Itinerary

Known as the cradle of ancient Chinese civilization, you will uncover in-depth history as you explore Luoyang, China's capital across 13 dynasties. Enjoy a private kung fu show in the Shaolin zen temple and trace the evolution of Chinese characters in the UNESCO-listed Yin Xu.

  1. Days 1-2: Anyang

Arriving into Handan or Zhengzhou airport, you will be transferred for your overnight stay in Anyang.

Anyang is famed as the birthplace of the Chinese characters with some UNESCO-listed attractions. You will visit Yin Xu with its oracle bone inscriptions before heading to the Museum of Chinese Character to appreciate the evolution of writing history in ancient China, as well as the Yuanshikai Tomb.

In the evening, you will be transferred for your train journey to Luoyang.

Accommodation: Wanda Realm Anyang (1 night)

  2. Days 2-5: Luoyang, China

Dive deep into the ancient Chinese history of Luoyang, once serving as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China.

Your journey in Luoyang begins with a visit to the White Horse Temple, which is known as the cradle of Chinese Buddhism. Opened in 2019, we then make a visit to Erlitou Relic Museum to learn about the history of the Xia Dynasty, recorded among the very first Chinese dynasties. We continue through the beautiful Songshan Mountain to visit the famous Shaolin Temple with a private kung fu show included. Continue to the Forest Pagodas and conclude with a magnificent evening Shaolin Zen Music Ritual. Please note that the show finishes at around 9.15pm and the return journey to Luoyang takes 2 hours.

As the new day beckons, we visit the Longmen Grottoes which contain the largest collection of Chinese art dating back to the late Northern Wei and Tan Dynasties. After a visit to the Luoyang Museum, we conclude with a walking tour of the Luoyang old town followed by a 24-course meal of Luoyang Water Banquet in Zhen Bu Tong Restaurant.

If your flight time on your final day permits, we can arrange optional tour to the Museum of Emperors Chariot Drawn by Six Horses of Zhou Dynasty. Afterwards, you will be transferred to Luoyang or Zhengzhou airport for your flight home.

Accommodation: Christian’s Hotel Luoyang (3 nights)
