Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Qinghai’s continental plateau location forms a unique climate, with low temperatures, long winters and dry and windy conditions, with an average rainfall of just 300mm. The winter temperatures rarely reach above -7°C, often plummeting well into the -20s. Spring is cool but beautiful, as the plateaus burst into life once more. The summer months from June to September are the best time to visit Qinghai, with warm, dry days and alpine flowers blooming across the grasslands. Even during the summer months, evenings can still be cool so warm layers are advisable.

Journey deep into the Amdo Tibetan area, straddling between Qinghai and Gansu, far from the well-worn standard Tibet circuit. Mingle with the Tibetan nomads as you traverse across pastoral grasslands, little-known monasteries and the 'Mirror in the Sky' salt lake.

  1. Days 1-3: Xining

Depart for the Gautama Monastery, erected in the Ming Dynasty with a proud Tibetan Buddhism architecture. While most monasteries were leveled during the Cultural Revolution, this monastery has stayed in its original form which makes it a rare experience!

You will also visit the Qinghai Tibetan Medicine Museum, which is home to the world's longest Tangkha, a type of Tibetan Buddhist painting used to spread the teachings of Buddha, Lamas, Bodhissatvas and deities. Measuring at a staggering total of 618 metres, the Tangkha took four years and 400 artists to complete.

    Accommodation: Sofitel Xining (2 nights)

  2. Days 3-4: Chaka Salt Lake

Today, we drive into Chaka Salt Lake, known as the Uyuni for its famed 'Mirror of the Sky' effects which makes it an endearing photography location. We will visit the lake both in the afternoon, as well as in the evening to see the reflection of starry sky.

Accommodation: Jinling Haoxuan Hotel (1 night)

  3. Days 4-5: Guìdé

Afterwards, we drive along the shores of Qinghai Lake, China's largest lake measuring 4,317 kilometres and a maximum depth of 25.5 metres. After a 30-minute cruise in the lake, enjoy a one-hour hike around the Er Langjian Scenic Area. Time-permitting, you will also visit Riyue Mountains, Ri and Yue Pagodas.

In Guide, you will visit both the National Geological Park and Kanbula National Forest Park to admire the surreal geological formations. Afterwards, you will observe the painted symbols of Regong Arts and giant Buddha rock carving on your way to Tongren, where you will take a rest for the night.

Accommodation: Jing Yue Ge Hotel (1 night)

  4. Days 5-7: Tongren

This morning, you will hike up Kalachakra Stupa for a panoramic view of Guomar Monastery. In Buddhism, a Kalachakra stupa is the rarest kind of stupa as it contains symbolism connected to the Kalachakra Tantra as a protection against negative energies.

Afterwards, we continue into Shuang Peng Xi Village, the birthplace of Gendun Chopel who is one of the most important Tibetan intellectuals famous for his critical essays and poetry skills.

The next morning, you will enjoy a guided hike to a hill for a view of the Wu Tun Monastery site before dropping into some monks' houses to admire their skills in painting Thangkas along the monastery compound. Afterwards, we will drive along the Sangke grassland before arriving at Xiahe.

    Accommodation: Hongfengde Hotel (2 nights)

  5. Days 7-9: Zhangye

In Xiahe, you will visit the imposing Labrang Monastery to meet the local monks. Labrang Monastery is considered among the greatest monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Today, it is home to the largest monk populations outside the Tibet Autonomous Region.

You will also visit the Gong Tang Pagoda, as well as a local nunnery to learn about the daily lives of the Tibetan nuns.

For those with extra night and do not mind a long day of driving, a day trip to Langmusi can be arranged at additional cost. Langmusi is a charming Tibetan alpine town nestled across two large monastery complexes.

Accommodation: Norbu Serwo Hotel (2 nights)
