Made famous by the Mogao Caves, the historical city of Dunhuang sits in the middle of a desert and used to be an important transit stopover for the northern and southern trade routes of the past. The Mogao Caves are particularly iconic as the leading Buddhist site in China, where caves are filled with Buddhist murals, statues and other art treasures.
Traverse across the desert to the Echo Sand Mountain, which is named after the phenomenon of the whistling music produced by the sand dunes when one slide on the surface of the sand. Tucked at a corner of the Echo Sand Mountains is the Crescent Lake, a perennial lake that sits in the middle of a windy desert and never dries up.
