Average time to visit

Shanghai and eastern China’s subtropical climate brings with it four distinct seasons. The weather is generally mild and temperate, with a great deal of rainfall even in the drier months of the year. The frequent monsoon showers and scorching temperatures of June, July and August can make it uncomfortably humid, with the mercury regularly rising over 35°C. Winter is overcast and chilly, although snow seldom falls in this eastern region of China. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times to visit Shanghai and eastern China, with pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists.

Delicately restored from a 300-year-old courtyard mansion at one of China's most picturesque villages, Wuyuan Skywells is an authentic rural retreat secluded up in the hills on the protected, pedestrians-only Sixi Yancun Scenic Area.

A rare 300-year-old property which formerly served as a merchant inn, Wuyuan Skywells has seen the rise and fall of the Qing Empire, turned into the house of a wealthy spinster at the turn of the 20th century, acted as an office for the village commune before turning into the authentic boutique property it is today.

Roaming around the property, guests can also unravel stories of the people who once lived in the house with documents, newspapers, household items and decorations recovered within the house, such as music instruments, originao Mao-era posters, or merchant bankers' business notes from the 1900s.

Each of the 14 modern bedrooms are built in the historic Huizhou architectural style with ornate wooden, stone and carving interiors, yet lovingly restored with a Western Architecture team to bring out modern comfort such as soft beds with King Koil mattresses, soundproofing through high-grade thick insulation, air-conditioning, modern Kohler-fitted bathrooms, USB ports and WiFi.

Both local and Western food is served in the airy restaurant, as well as a selection of drinks at the in-house bar with an English country pub vibe.
