Maui's East Coast is the rainiest part of Maui, and is has a tropical climate with the best months being May to September. Temperatures are high throughout the year but never excessive, as humidity levels are manageable. There is a rainy season from December to March which is also ironically, the tourism high season, when the scenery is at its most lush and long, hot days break up the rainy spells.

Description

Offering a slice of old Hawaii at its best, Travaasa Hana is a wonderfully relaxing and welcoming beach hotel on Maui’s North Shore, and a superb place for both families and couples to truly kick back and enjoy Hawaii’s natural beauty.

In the shadow of the huge volcano Haleakala, and set among a wonderland of rainforest, moss and bright orange lilima blossoms, Travaasa Hana (formerly Hana Maui) more than most resorts in Hawaii has managed to retain a feeling of unspoiled paradise. The moment you arrive, you will be given a cool scented towel and a glass of fresh fruit juice to welcome you.

The accommodation comprises 47 oceanfront Sea Ranch and Bay View cottages, with sliding glass doors to your own private sit-out lanai where you can contemplate the breathtaking Pacific Ocean views. These vaulted wooden houses are restricted to adults, and are decorated in vintage Hawaiian plantation style, with plush feather beds, authentic kapa-print fabric furnishings, Hawaiian artwork and bamboo floors. A hot soaking tub and an enclosed garden off the modern bathroom, along with complimentary mini-bar, further add to the opportunities for relaxation. Ceiling fans rather than air conditioning waft the trade winds through to keep you cool, and there are no TVs to interfere with the sounds of the surf – a signal to slow down and forget your worldly cares.

There are also 23 Garden View cottages, set back among the lush palm-filled gardens, and more suitable for families. These are similar in size, and have an indoor seating area, one or two beds and a shared outdoor patio. For complete privacy, a turn-of-the-century Plantation House has two bedrooms and is a ten-minute walk from the hotel's main building, and provides the consummate Hawaiian experience.

The menu at Travaasa Hana’s Ka'uiki restaurant changes daily and features organic, locally sourced fruits, vegetables, seafood and meat, serving traditional Hawaiian specialities such as fern shoot salad, and fish smoked with guava and mango wood or served with sweet potato and a ginger lime coconut sauce. In the evenings, the Paniolo bar plays host to local musicians, overlooking the bay.

Spend your days relaxing by one of three pools, a heated wellness pool (with hot tub) on the Sea View Cottage side of the property, a garden pool and the lava rock whirlpool at the wonderful spa, where you can pamper yourself with a range of healing treatments, or take the shuttle to Hamoa Beach, a perfect crescent of sand regularly featured among the world’s best.

Activities range from yoga classes, snorkelling, throw net fishing, archery, authentic Hawaiian pursuits such as lei making, learning to play the ukulele, and some fantastic coastal walks. And if you like horse riding, taking a trail ride with the local Hawaiian cowboys is an experience you are unlikely to forget.

Sadly we arrived into this little town in the rain and so first impressions weren't the best, we had a warm reception though and were taken on a brief tour of the hotel en route to our bungalow. Hana really is a tiny place and the hotel monopolises the centre of this sleepy town although not in a bad way, it's been part of the community for many years and a lot of the locals work here. They're wonderfully friendly and genuinely are pleased you came to stay in their little piece of Maui. We have an ocean bungalow which is across the road fr the main hotel but only 6-7 minutes leisurely stroll away so really no bother. There's the wellness pool over here so it's the more adult orientated part of the hotel and the ocean bungalows are reserved for adults only. They look out over the bluff toward the rolling ocean waves and you gently drift off at night to the sounds of the waves as they crash in. Ask for a bungalow at the front for the best views. This is a more rustic hotel and whilst it is exceptionally comfortable, there's no air conditioning and no TV's (except in the two family suites). The bungalows are designed to let the Pacific breezes drift through to keep you cool and that certainly worked when we were there. Back in the main part of the hotel, the restaurant is well worth a visit? It's really the only fine dining option in town and certainly the best place for breakfast in the morning. A stay here is about reconnecting with peace, nature and yourselves, I felt it's s wonderful place for a couples retreat as wellness is at its core, and to a certain extent they're really well geared up for families with a family pool and games room, not to mention the two bedroom suites. However, this is not the place if you need entertaining and lots going on, you'll be in bed before 10pm here and awake early to greet the day, all to the accompaniment of the ocean below.
