One of Bhutan's oldest temples dating back to the 7th century, the Kyichu Lhakhang was built under the patronage of the Tibetan Emperor, Songtsen Gampo. Legend has it that Padmasambhava (often known as "The Second Buddha"), the boy who appeared in the center of a lotus flower, hid treasure teachings around the temple. Enter the inner hall, where a remarkable 7th century statue of Jowo Shakyamuni awaits; this is considered one of the holiest shrines in all of Bhutan.
