Norway is a fantastic country with so much to offer in terms out outdoorsy activities. It is important to be aware that it is a country of changeable weather, so it is best to be prepared for anything! Here are Europe Expert, Milly‘s top tips of what to pack for where.

The cities – Oslo and Bergen

Norwegians are very casual and relaxed, so there is no need to pack your finest clothing for dinner here, a pair of jeans and a top or shirt with some casual loafers, trainers or pumps is completely acceptable.

During the day time, it is best to be comfortable with shoes that you can spend the day walking around in as both cities are small and pretty much everything is accessible on foot.

Do pack a small umbrella, so if you do get caught in one of the showers you are prepared. The rain falls in the summer here tend to be almost of a tropical nature (although not quite as warm!) with short but strong bursts.

Bergen

Norwegian cities are a treasure trove of things to do

The countryside – Aurland and Alesund Fjords

This is the area where you can enjoy a variety of fantastic outdoor activities, so it is best to have your gym gear to hand!

I would advise packing hiking boots as an absolute must as if the ground is damp then you a protected with waterproof shoes. These are also much more supportive than regular trainers, so better suited to the more rugged terrain. It is also good to have a pair of comfy shoes or trainers to wear in the evenings after a day out in the countryside.

Gym leggings or hiking trousers are perfect for this reason. It is good to have a few layers for the changing weather, ideally a t-shirt, long sleeved jumper and a down jacket if you have one. If not then a warm, lightweight jumper and jacket will suffice.

A waterproof jacket is essential, just an outer water-resistant shell layer will do as well as some waterproof trousers. You can buy these pretty cheaply from most outdoor shops and they generally come in handy small drawstring bags, so don’t take up too much space.

A small, comfortable rucksack with a waist and chest strap is the ideal bag to take as a day pack. You can then easily carry your waterproofs and any layers you want to take off as well as a bottle of water too.

In the evenings here, it is again very relaxed, so no glad rags are needed.

Do pack your swim suits/trunks as many of the hotels have a sauna and/or hot tub to relax in after an active day out.

If going out on the RIB safari in Alesund, it is a good idea to have a pair of gloves to hold on to the metal handle with. You will be provided with a full waterproof overall for this experience too, so no need for waterproofs on this.

Finally, it is also worth chucking in some sun cream, a pair of sunglasses, a pair of shorts and a sun hat – just in case the weather is really on your side!
