Why we love Courchevel 1550

Helen, one of our ski experts gives us the low-down on Courchevel 1550.

If 1850 is a pair of glitzy but slightly-uncomfortable heels then 1550 is a gorgeously well-worn pair of boots that you love with quiet devotion. It’s not as glamorous, sure, not ‘to see and be seen’, not quite as fast paced and exciting but for a really relaxing home from home holiday I really wouldn’t look anywhere else.

Courchevel 1550What do I look for from a ski holiday?

The Skiing
Access to the Three Valleys ski area is fantastic with a gondola and a six-man chairlift getting you up and into the thick of it quickly and efficiently. Equally, skiing down from 1850 couldn’t be simpler via two easy, fast blue runs which bring you right into the heart of the village.

The Village
Just been given a face-lift which has left it safe (pedestrianised) and modern but with an entirely unspoilt and traditional feel. It’s easy to walk around being small and friendly, and there is much more of a local feel than the rest of Courchevel Valley which for the most part is much more commercialised.

The Food
There’s a really good variety of restaurants including the superb l’Oeuil de Boeuf where you can chat to the ever-present owner over a suitably decadent glass of red whilst tucking into a hearty steak by the open fire (and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to do it).

The Après
Admittedly 1550 is not known for its crazy après-ski. There are a few relaxed spots to grab a post-skiing drink but 1850 is just a short bubble ride away and it runs until 7.30pm, so you and your family or friends can easily head up for drinks, ice-skating or bowling after skiing before heading to the chalet for supper.

The Entertainment
If you’re an adrenalin junkie and skiing isn’t quite enough for you then look no further than the luge run that speeds its way down into 1550 centre over 2.3km, 300m altitude and an average of 15% gradient! The Grangettes bubble is free after 5pm for sledgers and it is lit up until 7.30pm. Alternatively if you fancy having a bash something a little more ‘gnarly’ head into the Wood Park and try out the box slides and other simple obstacles for freestyle beginners.

The Pampering
Historically 1550 hasn’t had much to offer in the way of spa facilities. However in your very own chalet you can enjoy an indoor swimming pool, sauna and a hot tub. And the pampering does not stop here as your very own private chef will create mouth-watering dishes whilst your host keeps your glass topped up.

So slip off those expensive, toe-pinching heels and slip into something more comfortable, you won’t regret it…
