What’s hot for 2016

As we say farewell to 2015, we’re getting excited about what the New Year has to offer. We believe 2016 is going to be a thrilling year for travel with exciting up-and-coming destinations to gorgeous new boltholes. Here are our thoughts on what’s hot for the year ahead…

The safari has far from evolved from the Big Five and this past year we have seen the opening of four new luxury lodges in Namibia including the Sorris Sorris. Here guests can stay in one of the nine suites designed to take in the surrounding landscape and search for desert-adapted elephants.

Alternatively award-winning guiding operators Time + Tide are launching a blue safari in October at Miavana, Madagascar where you will be able to discover the amazing biodiversity in the reefs of Nosy Ankao.

However if there’s one place that will capture the imagination this year it has to be the natural wonders Chile has to offer. Why not visit the wild Atacama Desert and discover the spectacular scenery of one of the driest places on earth. Opt for a hot air balloon safari and catch a glimpse of rare Andean flamingos flocking together on the Altiplano lakes or explore the endless glaciers and emerald lakes of Patagonia on horse-back or by foot; a dream holiday for any outdoor lover.

Neighbouring Peru also has a lot to offer for 2016 with different travel options to choose from on our Ultimate Peru itinerary. Arrive directly into Lima and cruise the Amazon on the M/V Aqua or hop on the Belmond Hiram Bingham train. Relax as this luxury train ride winds its way down the Sacred valley. Gaze out to views of the Urubamba River whilst sipping on a traditional Pisco sour and arrive at Machu Picchu where you can marvel at the iconic Inca ruins.

Amilla Fushi stands out in the Maldives with its modern design in a picture perfect setting. Having opened earlier this year, it looks set for even more success in 2016. Boasting aquamarine waters, it is the perfect location for snorkelling in the iconic untouched coral reefs. Go now, before everyone else does and stay in this heavenly home from home resort, ideal for honeymoons.

Elsewhere we are excitedly awaiting the opening of new hotel Amenemu in Japan. Set in the heart of the Ise Shima National Park this luxurious hotel takes inspiration from traditional Japanese ryokan and is due to open in early 2016. Meanwhile a year since its opening, The Reverie in Ho Chi Minh City has been designed to impress. This luxurious hotel is renowned for its bold interiors and opulence and is set to continue in popularity in 2016. For a less obvious option choose Cambodia, where the Phum Baitang has recently opened, offering a peaceful setting for families and couples wanting to get off the beaten track at this relaxing retreat. But if a cultural discovery is what you are interested in, delve into the customs and history of ever-changing Burma.

Closer to home in the Alps, take a look at the recent additions to the Scott Dunn collection. In Val D’Isere Le Yule Hotel & Spa has the perfect spot to enjoy a long lunch at the foot of the slopes, combining 5* luxury with a relaxed and cosy atmosphere. Meanwhile in the heights of Val Thorens find Pashmina Le Refuge, which joins the Small Luxury Hotels collection. Here you can be transported to the skies with the chic and cosy igloo pod. Unwind under the stars after a long day on the slopes in your private haven.

In Northern Europe the unspoilt west coast of Norway holds some of Europe’s most imposing landscapes so it’s no wonder its one of our  top recommendations for 2016. With plenty of hiking and biking routes it the ideal destination for a more adrenaline-fuelled holiday. If you are looking for an adventure for all ages however, don your cowboy hats in Wyoming, taking in the vibrant colours and diverse wildlife of Yellowstone. The Yellowstone Junior Ranger’s Safari is perfect for families packed full of fun activities from viewing bison, bears and wolves to plaster casting animal tracks and roasting s’mores around the campfire.
