Sophie Jones, one of our Asia Consultants, writes on why she thinks Thailand is the perfect destination for a luxurious break in the sun.
For the perfect fun in the sun recipe there needs to be a number of key ingredients. A healthy portion of luxury accommodation, a dollop of first class service, a smattering of gourmet offerings, a drizzle of stunning scenery, a dash of charming local characters and of course a large pinch of fantastic weather. Everything else is seasoning. There is nowhere else in the world that I have been, where this mix has been as perfectly balanced or as brilliantly crafted as in Thailand – it was just delicious!
There are so many different beach destinations along the country’s two southern coasts and islands. From Koh Samui, Khoa Lak and Koh Phangan, to Koh Lanta, Phuket and Koh Kood – you are seriously spoiled for choice. Each different beach destination has something special to offer, but my personal favorites were ones that were a little more off-the-beaten-track, with arrivals by small boats and private planes, and the kind of spots that Robinson Crusoe could have only dreamed of.
Koh Samui’s little sister Koh Phangan on the east coast of Thailand instantly captured my heart. Koh Samui is a fabulous island with so much to offer, but I felt that Koh Phangan still felt a little bit undiscovered. The island often gets a bad rep as a destination solely for its wild full moon parties where backpackers rule the roost. However, as much as this is a misconception, it is also a blessing in disguise ensuring that the island has stayed as one of Thailand’s best kept secrets for the luxury traveler. Here there are still little visited coves, charming local villages and an overall atmosphere of chilled out island life. Adding to the experience, currently the only way to reach the island is by a speedboat from Koh Samui, increasing that feeling that you are escaping the world to a place where you really can forget that you own a phone and that emails actually exist and just 100% relax.
On the west coast with equally beautiful and dramatic scenery in the areas around Krabi, I really felt like I was in the Thailand that you see on postcards. With a mix of drives on winding roads through jungle terrain and boat rides zigzagging through turquoise bays, there is a wonderful feeling that you have really escaped to the exotic, to a place like no other. Full of bold bright colors, heady sea breezes and beautiful weather that wraps you in a warm embrace, the days that I spent here were truly blissful. The service and whole atmosphere of Krabi and Koh Lanta is much more relaxed meaning that it is not quite as polished as the more developed areas in and around Phuket on the west coast, but I don’t think that this hinders the experience in the slightest, just adds to the feeling of being away from it all.
Throughout my entire trip in Thailand, I was simply amazed by the hotels and the level of luxury that they offered. At each property, I became all too easily used to king sized beds that were so soft and inviting it felt like sleeping on air, beautifully perfumed bedrooms and enormous bathrooms with paddling pool sized bathtubs. Coming back to my flat in London was a rude awakening to say the least, lamenting the fact that I had lost my daily turndown service.
