Paul Sherratt, the winner of our competition to win a week in luxurious Chalet Le R, explores the delights of Courchevel 1550.
Over the years we’ve toyed with booking a family ski vacation at one of Scott Dunn’s tempting locations, and indeed many friends have come back enthusing about their vacations. However, what with one thing and another, we have simply never gotten round to booking with them.
That’s not to say I’m not a browser. You know the sort – from time to time surfing the Scott Dunn website and checking out their Facebook page. And so it was that, a few weeks ago, I found myself drooling over a competition to win a week in Courchevel 1550, courtesy of Scott Dunn, at Chalet Le R. All I needed to do was “like”, which I duly did.
Less than 2 weeks later and I find myself in that very same Chalet Le R as the competition winner!
Nestling in one of the finest positions in Courchevel 1550, with a stunning view across the valley to Champigny-sur-Marne and a few minutes walk (or drive if you prefer your host to take you) to the bubble that whisks you effortlessly up to 1850 and beyond, Chalet Le R really is a stunning location.
Having skiied the Les 3 Vallees many times over the years my demands have moved from wanting serious apres ski and a party atmosphere to wanting a more family focussed vacation and village. 1550 fits the bill perfectly. Everything is so close – from ski hire to “the best pizza restaurant in Courchevel” (should you wish to venture beyond the chalet) – the relaxed atmosphere of the Village simply adds to the charm.
Chalet Le R
As a “newbie” to Scott Dunn I was aware of the reputation of the company and of the level of service offered, however it’s safe to say that these levels have been far exceeded. The chalet host, Ben, looked after our every need (from broken shavers to left at home GoPro chargers) without flinching, and the chef, Sam, served a level of cuisine that I have struggled to find in some Michelin star restaurants.
And as for Chalet Le R itself?
How about an indoor pool, sauna and hot tup to ease those apres ski aches and pains. Enough tech to satisfy those with multiple devices and, with 6 bedrooms, enough space for up to 12 adults or 3 families to “lose themselves” in the property. Oh. Did I mention breakfast, afternoon tea, a champagne and canapé reception, four-course dinners, drinks and a driver to take you to and from the slopes?
Les 3 Vallees
And what about the skiing?
As beginners my two boys settled into lessons and, due to the vast array of piste available just within Courchevel, by the end of the week our “expeditions” had taken in La Tania, Courchevel 1650,1850 and beyond via a superb network of green and blue runs.
As the week progressed we tackled the more testing runs (either together or meeting at the bottom where runs converged) and had still only seen a fraction of what was on offer.
The reputation of Les 3 Vallees is, of course, well recognised and Courchevel 1550 makes a perfect base to explore the world’s largest ski area.
For those looking for a break from skiing, the Luge from 1850 to 1550 is a must. Not for the faint hearted it winds its way through the trees and ends up back in the village. Next time we must remember to tell the kids not to let go of their sledge if they fall off – trekking off piste to retrieve them was not easy! Still, the kids loved it!
So there you have it! No longer “a browser” I have finally tasted the Scott Dunn experience. I’m back on the website again, but now I’m planning the next trip. As they say – “Anything else is just a vacation”.
