Belmond’s diverse portfolio embraces some of the most remarkable destinations. Here we present Belmond Orcaella, an intimate river cruise which winds along the Ayeyarwady and Chindwin rivers…
Burma’s legendary Ayeyarwady River is well-traveled by cruise boats, including Belmond’s Road to Mandalay. However, Belmond Orcaella takes more adventurous travelers off the beaten track, further south to Yangon and up the Chindwin River.
No trip to Burma is complete without climbing Bagan’s pagodas at sunset, pottering around the floating villages of Inle Lake and exploring the colonial streets of Yangon. But for those who want to get a bit deeper under the skin of Burma, are returning to this magical country for a second time, or have longer to play with, it’s definitely worth checking out the Orcaella’s itineraries. The mere names of them make me want to take a trip: Gorges of the Far North, and Jewels of the Ayeyarwady, ouzing romance and mystery. With train rides into the jungle and teak forests in Kachin State, journeys past villages on stilts, and visits to island monasteries, passengers on the Orcaella are able to journey where other cruise boats don’t.
The Orcaella itself boasts 25 luxurious cabins all with fantastic view points as you float along the river. Endulge all the senses and feast on the delicious burmese food cooked by Belmond’s experienced chefs in the restaurant located on the top floor. Alongside the local cuisine, there is also a European menu with an array of international plates.
The Orcaella still takes in Bagan on all four of its journeys, but it has a much more tailored feel to it than other boats, with specially organized cycling trips, much more in-depth temple tours, and the tours themselves tend to be a bit more specialized. You might even find you are given a guide all to yourself where you can learn more about the ancient customs and local traditions.
I’ve been to Burma twice now and, having been introduced to the unique journeys on the Orcaella, I can’t wait to explore this diverse country in more depth.
