Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Temperatures in Bahia vary little from month to month and it's warm all year round, with average highs hovering around 30°C. April to July is the wettest season (though it can rain at any time) and June to September bring slightly cooler evenings. Salvador goes mad during Carnival (February or March depending on the year) - more than 2 million party-goers hit the streets for a colourful riot of dancing and drinking - expect prices to hike and availability to fall dramatically.

Itinerary

Brazil is a paradise for active travellers, with incredible national parks, mountains, forest and beaches all inviting adventures throughout this vast and varied country. Discover Rio before flying up to the state of Bahia which is rich in Afro-Brazilian culture, home of capoeira, idyllic beaches and the impressive table top mountains of Chapada Diamantina National Park.

  1. Fly to Rio de Janeiro

  2. Days 1-4: Rio de Janeiro

Start your journey in Rio de Janeiro, where the iconic beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema are sandwiched in between colourful neighbourhoods, verdant mountains and the Atlantic ocean. Soak in the party atmosphere and spend days exploring the city's highlights. Get off the beaten path and discover Rio's southern beaches with a private guide, enjoying some stand-up paddleboarding out on the water. A hike has also been included to Two Brothers Hill which although challenging will reward you with spectacular views across Rio's beautiful skyline.

    Accommodation: Sofitel Ipanema (3 nights)

  3. Days 4-6: Salvador

Fly north to Salvador, the capital of Bahia state which is rich in Afro-Brazilian culture and has a year-round carnival atmosphere. A city tour has been included to introduce you to the highlights of Salvador with a private guide, giving you chance to learn about the culture and traditions of this proud region. Bahia is also where capoeira originated, a traditional Brazilian martial art form which requires plenty of agility and flexibility. This impressive sport is practised widely in Salvador and an introductory class with a capoeira master has been included.

    Accommodation: Villa Bahia (2 nights)

  4. Days 6-9: Bahia

Fly from Salvador to Lençóis, which is a perfect base for exploring the wonders of Chapada Diamantina National Park. Lençóis itself is a charming colonial town with a riverside location, pedestrianised cobblestone streets and a multitude of hole in the wall restaurants. After days of trekking and climbing in the national park, it comes to life and is the perfect place to unwind. During the day, head into Chapada Diamantina National Park itself which is famous for its iconic table top mountains, vibrant blue lagoons, waterfalls and caves. Enjoy three days of hiking with a private guide, taking in the absolute highlights of the park. For those with a keen sense of adventure then we can arrange more intense climbing and abseiling.

Accommodation: Hotel Canto das Aguas (3 nights)

  5. Days 9-13: Itacare

The final stop on your adventure is one of Bahia's many beautiful beaches. Txai Resort is the perfect place to end your trip with a secluded location, a huge stretch of coastline and charming rustic-chic bungalows enveloped by swaying palm trees. The resort is surrounded by rich Atlantic rainforest and has numerous walking trails which are easily accessible to guests of the hotel, as well as options to visit nearby waterfalls with a guide or discover other beaches in the area by speedboat. Surfing can be arranged if the sea conditions permit. Fly home via Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro.
