Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Chiapas and the surrounding highlands have a temperate climate, and daytime temperatures generally remain warm all year round. Nights can be pleasantly cool in summer (June-October), but in the winter you’ll be glad there are blankets and fires in the rooms. Nestling in front of an open log fire can be very romantic - just bear in mind the nightly drop in temperature when you book your trip. The rainy season lasts from June to September.

Itinerary

A fabulous journey into the living cultural heartland of the Mayas which takes you from Mexico City to Chiapas, visiting historic San Cristobal de las Casas and jungle-clad Palenque before finishing in the old pirate haunt of Campeche on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. An authentic introduction to Mexico's rich cultures.

  1. Fly to Mexico City

  2. Days 1-3: Mexico City, Mexico

Arrive into Mexico City, the perfect jumping off point for an introduction to Mexican culture and its rich Aztec and Mayan history. The city is alive with stories from the days of the Spanish conquistadors and while here there is an abundance of things to do, exploring ancient and more recent history with iconic former inhabitants such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Explore the artistic legacy of Frida and Diego on a historical city tour, discovering the Templo Mayor ruins right on the Zocalo (main square) and the National Palace with its fascinating and detailed murals.  Mexico City is also the perfect place to get to know Mexican cuisine with an incredible range of dining options from street food stands to Michelin starred dining. We have included a taco and mezcal tour so you can begin your culinary journey.

    Accommodation: La Valise (2 nights)

  3. Days 3-6: San Cristobal de las Casas

Next it's a short hop to Tuxtla Gutierrez, where we will take you by boat through the impressive Sumidero Canyon en route to San Cristobal de las Casas, one of Mexico's most picturesque and colourful colonial towns and the epicentre of vibrant arts and crafts made by the local Indians. Take some time to wander through the cobbled streets, haggle for a beautifully woven textile, visit a couple of excellent museums, and be sure to head out into some of the surrounding villages to see a way of life little changed in centuries. Stay for three nights and enjoy a guided tour of the city and its surrounding villages, interacting with the local weaving communities and hiking through rural Mexico.

    Accommodation: Hotel Bo (3 nights)

  4. Days 6-8: Palenque

Then delve into the Lacandon rainforest heading for Palenque, stopping off for a short stroll through the rainforest to the electric blue waters of the Agua Azul waterfalls. No-one can prepare you for the grandeur of Palenque as it looms from the jungle and you can wander among giant tree roots, exploring this glorious reminder of the Maya civilisation. The pyramid temples, friezes, ball courts and plazas are a tribute to the advanced civilisation of the Mayas. Stay at the beautiful Quinta Chanabnal, a delightful boutique hotel with a great ambience and superb food.

Accommodation: Boutique Quinta Chanabnal (2 nights)

  5. Days 8-11: Campeche

Then, it's on to Campeche, an old port on the Gulf of Mexico that was a major buccaneering port in its 17th century heyday. Now the streets are filled with wandering mariachi bands and buzzing restaurants, and a visit to the fort is redolent with history. Stay three nights at the superb Hacienda Puerta Campeche, a beautifully restored collection of houses which have been transformed into a boutique hotel with plenty of character. We have included a half day city tour of Campeche, along with a guided visit to the nearby ruins of Edzna which remain virtually undiscovered. The relaxed pace of Campeche makes it the perfect place to end your trip but those with more time may wish to head to the beaches of the Riviera Maya before flying home.

Accommodation: Hacienda Puerta Campeche (3 nights)

  6. Fly home
