Spotlight on Nomad Tanzania

You’d be hard-pressed to find another safari operator in Africa like Nomad Tanzania, which is why we’re head over heels excited to be partnering with them to present our 2018 Been There, Dunn That social media competition.

Luxury is not one size fits all, and for Nomad, it’s not all about over-the-top luxury décor like brass taps and glass walls. Nomad’s luxury lies in that their camps are set in the best locations, the lodges themselves blending in perfectly to their incredible surrounds and the fact that they use the best guides just adds to the wow factor.

Though Nomad has a number of phenomenal properties across Tanzania in their portfolio from the light, airy and utterly romantic Lamai Serengeti (perfect for viewing the wildebeest migration) to the magical Greystoke Mahale resting on remote shores of Lake Tanganyika, flanked by the lush forest of the Mahale Mountains (the chimp trekking from here is unbelievable), two of our favorites are Kigelia Ruaha  and Sand Rivers Selous. This is where the lucky winner of our Been There, Dunn That photo competition will lay their heads during a 7-night safari adventure in southern Tanzania.

Kigelia Ruaha – 4 nights

Kigelia Ruaha is an elegantly simplistic camp, set in the best game rich area of the vast Ruaha National Park, high on the banks of the Ifuguru sand river. The Ruaha is often described as “Africa the way it once was” and on this thrilling safari you’ll be able to experience unspoiled beauty that is hard to find anywhere else in the country.

Here the charming and airy tents are set beneath the boughs of the Sausage Tree from which the camp takes its name. each of the spacious tents are furnished with locally crafted furniture in pale woods and the en-suite bathroom has a hot safari-style bucket shower under the stars.

From sunrise to sunset, Ruaha National Park is full of adventure and unique African beauty. Alongside the camp’s expert guides you can enjoy comfortable game drives or walking safaris, spotting elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, zebra, giraffe and baboons as well as tons of bird life. After a thrilling and exhausting day of game viewing you can unwind around the camp-fire with your sundowners and a simple but delicious meal, gazing at the baobab silhouettes and the stars.

Sand Rivers Selous– 3 nights

Set in the World Heritage Site of the Selous, Sand Rivers is a stylish, luxurious safari lodge on the banks of the Rufiji River. Being the second largest protected wilderness area in the world, one of the area’s main attractions is its diverse habitats which include open glades, woodland, river, palm fringed lakes and rocky gorges.

The lovely lodge features a refreshing swimming pool, open-air dining room, bar and lounge which have been beautifully constructed on a sweeping curve of the great Rufiji River, offering stunning views across the water. There are eight stone and thatched cottages – with en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, flush toilets and powerful showers. The beautiful open-fronted cottages are utterly unique, you can stargaze from your bed and be lulled to sleep by the relaxing sounds of the bush.

Aside from Sand Rivers’ spectacular location, the lodge prides itself on its excellent guiding and offers tons of fabulous activities. Go on game drives, walking safaris and boating or Spend an afternoon fishing on one of the sandbanks and the chef will cook whatever you catch that evening and serve it up for dinner.

These two camps also combine perfectly with other areas of Tanzania, or why not round out your safari with some relaxing beach time in Zanzibar?
