Average time to visit
This corner of South Africa has a wonderful temperate climate which can be visited all year round. The best game viewing is from May to the end September.
Summer (November to March) days can get quite warm (up to 28-32 degrees on average) but it is a dry heat. Summer rainfall, normally in the form of thunder storms are usually in the evening, however, the African climate is still always unpredictable. Autumn (April to May) days can still be warm but the evenings cool down. Average day time temperature 22-28 degrees. Evenings 10-15 degrees. Winter (June to August) days are warm (temperatures in the mid-twenties) evenings and early mornings very cold with average early morning temperatures 5-12 degrees. It very rarely rains at this time when the bush is golden and dry.
Spring (September, October) days start getting hotter, evenings and mornings could still be crisp but not as cold. A very slim chance of rain.

Tuningi Safari Lodge is a fantastic family-friendly property in the heart of Madikwe Game Reserve. On the South Africa-Botswana border, Madikwe is a celebrated big five reserve in a non-malarial environment, easily accessible from Johannesburg.
Situated in the western side of the 75,000 hectare Madikwe Game Reserve, Tuningi gets its name from a giant fig tree which sits at the heart of the lodge. The main thatched lodge offers beautiful indoor and outdoor sitting areas, a spacious dining room and a magnificent rim flow pool overlooking a busy a waterhole. Water is a valuable resource in this arid land, and the wildlife sightings from the deck at Tuningi can be phenomenal.
Only sixteen guests are able to stay in the camp at any one time, and it is one of the few lodges in South Africa which has really been designed to suit families and children of all ages.
Tuningi prides itself in a fantastic, educational kids programme. Catering for all ages, the in-camp staff of professional nannies and excellent guides tailor activities to the younger guests to ensure they have a memorable first experience in the bush.
Madikwe is a fantastic Big Five game reserve, home to a wide variety of common and lesser known species. One of the great success of Madikwe is the healthy population of wild dog on the reserve, as well as the critically endangered white and black rhino.
A real selling point of Tuningi are the thoughtfully designed rooming options. Surprisingly very few top lodges in South Africa are forward thinking in this regard. As a non-malarial area within easy reach of a major international airport, the Madikwe Game Reserve is an obvious choice for families. Tuningi offers a combination of different rooming options, suitable for all ages.
Four double suites can be reconfigured to triples for parents sharing with a small child and there are also family suites for people travelling with more than one child.
Fireplaces, expansive wooden decks, out and indoor showers, air conditioning, ceiling fans are found in all rooms.
Tuningi really has been designed with families in mind. Accepting all ages, the professional lodge staff and excellent team of rangers are able to tailor activities and the Tuningi experience to all ages.
Children under the age of five are taken out on to the Madikwe Reserve for short 'bumble' drives, a unique opportunity for them to experience the open vehicles and the sights, sounds and smells of the bush. Children over five are allowed to accompany their guide on the first game drive, this is a good opportunity, for both parents and guide, to see how they react to the experience. A decision is then taken as to whether they head out on the usual morning and evening drives, or stick to the specially tailored child friendly 'bumbles'.
For children who do not head out on game drives, some of the activities on offer include treasure hunts and t-shirt painting.
Experienced nannies are always available in the evenings to keep a watchful eye on sleeping children while their parents enjoy dinner and a drink by the fire.
Guests at Tuningi have a great opportunity to experience the bush at different times of day with day and night game drives. The rangers are trained walking guides, so you'll also have the opportunity to head out on foot, a fantastic way to experience the African bush.
