Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

If you're visiting Sossusvlei, the best thing to do is avoid the summer, which is extremely hot. Therefore, the best time to visit southern Namibia is in winter (May and September) but bear in mind that the desert regions can be bitterly cold at this time of year. The climate of the southern coast is hospitable from February to May, but quite cool and misty year-round, and particularly windy in August.

Description

Just a few miles from Namibia’s famous Deadvlei at Sossusvlei, The Desert Grace is a stylishly refined boutique property with an eco-friendly edge and endless views of the rolling dunes and ever-changing patterns of the desert.

Situated within the Gondwana Namib Park, The Desert Grace combines a contemporary design with subtle nods to traditional Namibian crafts and desert style in its decorative additions. With just twenty Twin Rooms and four Family Rooms, the property is small, welcoming and an elegant spot from which to soak in the spectacular landscapes that surround it.

The focus of any time spent at The Desert Grace is inevitably the captivating desert environment that surrounds the property. Floor-to-ceiling windows and doors create an unbreakable connection to this extraordinary exterior at almost every point in the hotel and flood the rooms with light. To allow the exceptional views out over the dunes and shifting sands of the Gondwana Namib Park to come to the fore, terrazzo floors and a simple colour palette of neutral tones and occasional splashes of colour have been used to create a welcoming, yet unobtrusive space. With a private plunge pool and terrace, both north and south facing rooms offer a space to unwind, enjoy the Namibian sun and soak in the views. A number of social areas combine comfortable sofas, mid-century design pieces and open fireplaces into a convivial, welcoming space for drinks, dining or simply relaxing with a book. While the stylish decor is a desert-chic take on contemporary African design, the occasional accent such as a neon pink bar sign and ice cream cart add an element of fun. Guests can discover the desert landscape that surrounds the property on a number of self-guided walks, take an e-bike tour or walk through the desert at night with a guide to spot scorpions. And of course no trip would be complete without a visit to the world’s highest dunes at Sossusvlei. Offering an exciting desert experience for both families and couples, The Desert Grace is a stylish property with a design-led appearance that never once detracts from the mesmerising beauty of its breathtaking surrounds.

Facilities

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant is an elegant yet relaxed space where, once again, the views of the desert take centre-stage. The wooden chairs, contemporary lines and flashes of pink echo the colours and simple lines of the sand dunes and mountains that lie outside, while the food is an innovative combination of international and local flavours.

With a strong environmental ethos, you can rest assured that your stay at The Desert Grace is working to preserve the beauty of the surrounding desert, with solar panels, a water-recycling plant and eco-friendly building practises.

Activities

Time spent at The Desert Grace revolves around the sand dunes and flora and fauna of the desert, with scorpion night walks, self-guided walks of 3, 5 or 7km and e-bike rides through the Namib Desert. A dune drive offers a chance to explore the desert landscape, passing ostriches and springbok before stopping atop a dune to enjoy a sundowner looking out over the endless expanse of bushman grasses, red-hued dunes and the purple mountains in the distance.
