Jessica Campbell

London Office

For me it has never just been about simply traveling to a country, I really want to get to know the place - get under its skin. As a result I have now lived and worked in five different countries (the 5th being England which I cannot help but come back to each time). My most recent and most brilliant venture took me to India, more specifically Mumbai, where I lived and travelled in 2013.

I totally fell in love with the place, the sheer size and diversity of the country blew me away, and I couldn’t get enough of all the different opportunities presented to me. I managed to go skiing in Kashmir, see the textiles in Gujarat, taste the tea in Darjeeling and hike the Himalayas in Sikkim. Still my appetite was not sated and I have since been back to explore the backwaters and spice plantations of Kerala.

Travel nuggets

  • When in India why not carry some pens or biscuits around with you for that inevitable knock on the window from a child begging – it’s better than money.

  • Wherever you go, try a day without your camera. Experience the sights, sounds and smells that you can’t capture on film.

  • Take a ‘yes’ attitude with you on holiday. You only regret what you don't do!

  • Go on an elephant safari Dera Amer only 40 minutes outside Jaipur - and you could be in the middle of nowhere. You will be won over by the elephants, the owner Udaijit and the delicious food.

My hot picks

Houseboat Lakes and Lagoons, Backwaters, Kerala and Karnataka, India

This is a really worthwhile experience. I would recommend staying a night on the houseboat, but if it isn’t for you, a leisurely cruise around the backwaters watching the locals at work on their rice paddies is pure magic.

Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India

For me this hotel really sums up the opulence and glamour of Rajasthan. It celebrates its heritage in a way that is delightful for the guest.
