My first love has always been wildlife so of course Africa was going to push all my buttons. I was lucky enough to find myself running tours in East Africa for 5 years as a primate specialist. In my free time, I of course took every opportunity to explore other parts of Southern, Eastern and Northern Africa and recently returned from a 4x4 road trip through Southern Africa.
Among my favorite experiences in Africa are flying in a microlight over the Victoria Falls, completing the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, watching a herd of elephants chase a pack of wild dogs in Zambia, snorkeling alongside a beautiful whale shark in Tanzania and sunbathing with lemurs in Madagascar.
Favourite places I've been
- If you plan on trekking to see the famous mountain gorillas, or doing any mountain trekking for that matter, make sure you break in your boots for several weeks before. Nothing worse than blisters ruining a life changing experience for you.
- Having your own binoculars is definitely a must, I spent a lot of time choosing mine and they are one of my most prized possessions along with my camera.
- If you enjoy photography, I would recommend a boat cruise in Chobe National Park in Botswana. Here you are pretty likely to get the opportunity to take some stunning photos of elephants playing in the water
- Try to sample the local food wherever you are, some of the most delicious things I have tried have been typical local dishes
My hot picks
This lodge is not only special because it is actually within the park, but the service and beauty of the rooms blew me away. The staff are fantastic and take care of the finest of details and I would have happily stayed in my tree house forever!
