Emma Spence

San Diego Office

With a background in finance and recruitment, Emma’s focus as VP Operations is very much on the engine room at Scott Dunn USA. Having been Finance Director and board member at Aardvark Safaris for nearly 20 years, Emma, along with husband John, joined the Scott Dunn management team in April 2016.

British-born Emma is a travel geek in her own right, having worked for luxury Greek villa company CV Travel before moving to The Economist in London. She’s traveled widely alone and with John and their two children, Jack and Lily. As a result, she’s spent lots of time in Africa but is now enjoying exploring other parts of the world.

Most recently, Emma hosted a group gorilla trekking trip to Uganda and Rwanda; celebrated a significant birthday in a tree house in Costa Rica; and stopped off in Morocco for a pre-Christmas break en-route to family in England.

A resident of Solana Beach since 2009, Emma’s interests include outdoor life and cooking.

Travel nuggets

  • Packing organizers eradicate the need to unpack everything when you’re on the road. They're essential on safari.

  • Charge everything whenever you can as who knows where the next charging point will be. (Guaranteed to keep teenagers happy!)

  • Don’t let your photos become your memories. Let the memories establish in your mind before you look at your photos and let them remind you.

  • Never underestimate the value of a good pair of yoga pants on safari. They're always comfortable to travel in but can also be dressed up with a kikoi and be candlelit dinner-ready in moments.

  • There's no such thing as too much travel. It's hands down the best education you can give yourself and your kids.
