Spending the third year of university in Egypt made me fall head over heels in love with the Arab world, particularly with Egypt. Whilst there I got the chance to travel to Jordan, Syria and Turkey, as well as visiting all corners of Egypt itself. It's such a diverse country but my favorite part is the Western Desert, particularly Siwa! It is so peaceful, but with loads of adventures to be had.
I currently specialize in the Middle East (Jordan, Oman and the UAE), North Africa (Egypt and Tunisia), Sri Lanka and the Maldives. I love the fact that the countries I specialize in are so diverse, offering a complete range of experiences, and there really is something for everyone. I particularly love the challenge of coming up with the ideal vacation for a guest, especially when they are looking for something a bit different.
What my guests have said
"Having recently returned from a most amazing trip to Egypt, organized by you, I felt compelled to put my thoughts in writing. The Zahra, our cruise boat down the Nile, was impeccable. The staff anticipated our every need and responded with true professionalism, friendliness and dedication. The cabins were beautifully appointed, the food absolutely outstanding. Each day we visited the most wonderful sites with an inspiring guide. We felt privileged to be experiencing the treasures of this wonderful country, sometimes completely alone! At all times we felt very safe and protected. I want to urge anyone keen to visit Egypt to do so as soon as possible before the crowds return."
"Clare was excellent. She listened to what we were looking for from our vacation and what we received was exactly what we had discussed. She followed up quickly on our conversations. She organized extra things such as leaving a couple of bags at Wallawwa."
"Clare couldn't have provided us with a more perfect and professional service. From the very start of our honeymoon planning, Clare was so helpful and accommodating. She provided us with our dream honeymoon which exceeded every one of our expectations. The Scott Dunn experience was hugely increased by her hard work. Thank you SO much Clare, an invaluable asset to Scott Dunn."
"Great trip as always - Clare really helped with her impressive knowledge of Egypt when sorting out the detailed itinerary."
"Clare knew the answer to every question I had and was happy to answer them no matter how many questions I had to ask."
"Many thanks to Clare for help in arranging this once in a lifetime vacation. We know she personally liaised with the boat while we were there to make sure everything was ok."
"Just perfect. Special thanks to Clare for arranging everything so efficiently."
"Full marks to Clare! She couldn't have done more to ensure we had a fabulous vacation."
"Full credit to Clare Monro for organising the trip in such a short time frame. She came up some excellent hotels which were just perfect!"
"Very professional approach. Lot of attention to detail. Friendly and helpful."
"Clare Monro was a complete star."
"Clare was excellent when our seaplane was cancelled and in dealing with resort after."
"I rang Scott Dunn on a Thursday and by Sunday we were on our way to Sri Lanka - the whole trip was organized in less than a few hours and they interpreted our vision of a relaxing vacation perfectly. The choice of small, boutique hotels in stunning locations was incredible."
"Clare Monro is very knowledgeable and helped throughout to put our vacation together the way we wanted. She was super friendly and efficient though out. Thank you Clare."
Favourite places I've been
- Pick Abu Dhabi over Dubai for an Emirati beach vacation; there is less construction but it still has an amazing water park, not to mention Ferrari World and the Formula 1 circuit – and it’s better value!
- Head down to Salalah in Oman in late September or early October to get off the beaten track and marvel at the lush greenness of the mountains after the southeast monsoon.
- There is so much more to Cairo than the Pyramids and the Khan el Khalili – pay a visit to Coptic Cairo to see some beautiful churches, visit Al Azhar Mosque, as well as the Gayer-Anderson Museum and the Ibn Tulun Mosque.
My hot picks
A beautiful alternative to a generic ‘international’ hotel with individually decorated rooms, just 20 minutes from the Valley of the Kings.
A modern boutique hotel in the heart of Mediaeval Cairo, with just 17 suites and a short walk from the Khan el Khalili bazaar.
A much more leisurely way to explore the Nile, by dahabiya or sailing boat. This one has been thoughtfully decorated and has even played host to Brangelina.
