Buddhist festival in Bhutan

Head to Bhutan and experience a mesmerising Buddhist festival with each dance depicting Buddhist tales with light relief provided by medieval-style jesters. Each festival has its own intricacies, from a Fire Dance to a Naked Dance where men from Jama Lakhang perform to ward off evil and honour their all-important life-giving organ. Celebrate Easter with the family in Guatemala and Belize

Semana Santa is celebrated with colorful celebrations in the colonial splendour of Antigua. The residents decorate the streets with carpets of flowers and there are processions consisting of big floats bearing statues of Christ carried by hundreds of purple-robed men. Continue on to Tikal, an impressive Mayan site and then cross the border into Belize where you base yourself at a stunning lodge with plenty of outdoor activities.

Crop Over Carnival, Barbados

Festivity of St Rosalia, Sicily

The Festivity of St Rosalia in Palermo is a major social and religious event in Palermo with its procession, led by a triumphal cart with the statue of the Saint. Full of gold jewels and flowers, it passes through the streets of the city. There is also a wonderful fireworks display at the end.

Fire Boat Festival, Laos

This colorful festival in Luang Prabang is celebrated by illuminated boat processions along the mighty Mekong River. More than 20,000 boats make their way down the river during the night, each made by a local family wishing for good luck and paying their respects to the spirit of the waters. During the day, locals adorned in their traditional clothing sing and dance their way through the UNESCO world heritage town.

Hokitika Wild Foods Festival, New Zealand

Head to New Zealand’s west coast in March for the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival. Try some gourmet "bush tucker" and native New Zealand food. It is a unique celebration inspired by some of the more weird and wacky produce from New Zealand’s bountiful landscape. Popular delicacies include New Zealand whitebait fritters, gorse flower wine, ponga fern pickles and huhu grubs.

Kumbh Mela, India

2013 is the year of the Kumbh Mela which occurs every 12 years in Allahabad North India. The festival is expected to be the largest ever gathering of humanity in the whole of history. It is a pilgrimage of faith for millions of Indians who come to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganga where it meets the Yamuna. Medieval football tournament in Piazza Santa Croce, Florence

In the third week of June every year Florentines celebrate their Patron Saint’s day with a medieval football tournament in Piazza Santa Croce, a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Relais Santa Croce Hotel in the heart of the city. Visit at this time and enjoy the electric atmosphere around this event, which has taken place every year since the 16th century.

From 01-17 February Quebec City plays hosts to a magical winter event, Carnevale! Rio Carnival, Brazil

With Rio hosting the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016 we recommend traveling in 2013 before prices go up. The carnival is the year’s hot ticket, however we recommend going a week later for the Winner’s parade where you can witness the year’s best samba school strutting their stuff. After your stay in Rio, head to the glamorous beach resort of Buzios for some R&R.

St Marina’s day, Crete

The festival of St Marina in Limnes takes place in Crete in mid January. It is infamous and not to be missed if you are on the island. It is organized by the taverna’s of the village and there is live Cretan music with wonderful performances and a fantastic atmosphere.
