Books for children

We have pulled together our recommended books for children, for when they (and you!) need some down time. If you are looking for something to capture their imaginations on a long plane or train journey, settle them into a siesta or when the UK summer weather just isn’t playing ball, here is our selection of summer-themed reads and activity books.

Poems to tickle your funnybone, selected by Jack Prelutsky

Strictly speaking, the independent reading level for this collection of wacky poems is ages 9 to 12, but the fun in this book should not be limited to this one age group. "Norman Norton's Nostrils" and "Be Glad Your Nose Is on Your Face" will have kids from ages 1 to 101 laughing out loud. Best read aloud with kids for a belly laugh on nearly every page.

Mr Popper's penguins, by Richard and Florence Atwater

Mr Popper is distracted by thoughts of diving in the South Seas, climbing the Himalayas, and, especially, exploring the North and South Pole. The laughs begin when an unusually large package arrives for Mr Popper all the way from Antarctica. When an unmistakable "ork" is heard from inside, you know life will never be the same at the Popper house as they figure out how to keep a penguin cool, how to take it for a walk, and what to do with the baby penguins after she lays and hatches eggs. Read it for just plain fun.

Summer things to make and do, by Leonie Pratt

Packed with summer-themed activities, this book is ideal for long car journeys, wet afternoons or lazy days in the garden. It includes projects such as making a fishing boat mobile, fingerprint sea horses, printed flip-flops and wavy pop-ups, as well as 250 stickers.

The summer sticker book, by Fiona Watt and Stella Baggott

Packed with over 500 stickers, this summer-themed activity book has appeal for toddlers and beyond. Scenes to decorate with stickers include the seaside, jungle, summer flower garden, pirate ship and zoo. This will capture the excitement and interest of children of all ages, parents might even want a go to!
