Dubai, the 'Pearl of the Arabian Gulf' is concentrated mainly on its exquisite creek, the finest natural shelter in 1600km (1000 miles) of coastline. Bur Dubai, the original town, has substantial areas of old buildings, atmospheric alleyways and souks (markets). There is also the Sikket-El-Kheil souk and a museum. The modern city is on the Deira side of the creek and is cosmopolitan and lively, with many attractive gardens and first-class shopping facilities, ranging from Western-style shops to the ancient souks where spices, perfume, clothing, antiques, handicrafts and jewels are available. There are outstanding sporting facilities in Dubai, including powerboat racing, water-skiing, snorkelling and ice skating. There is an all-grass 18-hole golf course at the Emirates Golf Club, 20km west of Dubai City, which also offers a swimming pool, tennis courts, squash courts and a snooker room. Another 18-hole golf course was recently landscaped in Dubai at the new Dubai Creek Golf Club on the creek.
