Description
Your adventure begins in the auspicious surroundings of the Imperial Hotel for a night before transferring down Madhya Pradesh, the best place to uncover the diversity of India’s wildlife.
The &Beyond lodges are absolutely second to none – taking the superlative qualities of their African lodges into India and the result has been the breathtaking collection of lodges throughout Madhya Pradesh, all offering a different wildlife and lodge experience. Our suggested itinerary takes in Bandhvagarh, Kanha and Pench, but there is also another lodge in Panna National Park.
After a short flight with Kingfisher Air, you will land into Jabelpur and transfer to Bandhavgarh National Park. The Bandhavgarh National Park is in the north of Madhya Pradesh and was the former hunting ground for the Maharaja of Rewa. The park has open grasslands as well as sal mixed forests and offers an incomparable likelihood to witness the tiger in the wild. The Mahua Kothi draws its name from ‘Butter Tree’ and mixes traditional local tastes with modern luxury. Bandhavgarh is quite hilly, making the views stunning – and it also contains an amazing remote temple in the centre of the park.
You will then drive south to Kanha where you will stay in Banjar Toli which unlike Mahua Kothi is a luxury tented camp. Kanha is one of the largest parks in India and contains a mixture of meadows, grassy highlands and bamboo jungle. It has a large population of tigers and leopards as well as swamp deer.
You will then drive back toward Pench National Park, said to be the inspiration of the Kiplings’s Jungle Book. Bagh Van is a superb lodge – and in our opinion a good way to end your wildlife experience. You can spend the night in the open air ‘Machan’ before waking up and heading into the park which is noted for its sheer variety of wildlife and birdlife.
Pench is only a two hour drive from Nagpur and you can easily take the evening flight to Mumbai to connect with the flight back to London meaning you do not need an overnight stop.
Some guests like to end in the impressive Ahilya Fort which is accessed by a short flight from Nagpur to Indore. Ahilya offers a taste of authentic India in a heritage fort overlooking the Narmada River. Other guests have chosen to fly down to Goa, Kerala or even the Maldives to offer some beach time at the end of their trips. For those wanting a little more culture in the itinerary, we suggest adding Varanasi, Khajuraho and Ahilya Fort. You can of course do the route in reverse, and as we always say this is only a suggested itinerary and can be tailored to suit your individual needs.
