Description

Safari needn't be all about early starts and late finishes, at The Retreat Selous, there is a more relaxed way to do things. If you don't feel like going on a game drive simply ask for a massage instead. Be soothed by the flow of the Ruaha River, which flows past the treatment area, as healing hands smooth away your cares. Game drives will take you into the surrounding area for excellent game viewing but you may also be lucky enough to experience some fantastic sightings along the riverbank outside your room. The Retreat's suites are designed with romance in mind with antique furniture and flowing drapes being a key feature. Dine under the stars in a variety of secluded locations or on the terrace of the impressive 'fort' that constitutes the lodge's public area.

If you can bear to tear yourself away you'll then take a short flight to Zanzibar for a week on the beach. Baraza is arguably the best resort in Zanzibar, offering a very high standard of accommodation in 30 one- and two-bedroom villas alongside a beautiful stretch of white-sand beach. Each has its own private plunge pool, sitting are and spacious en-suite bathroom and is fully air-conditioned. Enjoy treatments in the extensive spa and make use of the gym, tennis courts and watersports facilities.

If you would like a slightly less expensive option in Zanzibar. Breezes Hotel & Spa, the sister hotel of Baraza and is set on the east coast of the island on a beautiful stretch of beach. With 70 rooms and suites it is a Zanzibari-style four star resort with plenty of activities on offer including a watersports centre and extensive spa. There is also a large outdoor pool and, in addition to the buffet restaurant, an á la carte restaurant which can be booked at additional cost. As with most of Zanzibar, the beach is tidal.

The guide prices include the following special offers valid until October 2011: 4 nights for the price of 3 nights at The Retreat Selous and 7 nights for the price of 6 nights at Breezes Hotel & Spa or Baraza Resort & Spa. Terms and conditions apply.

Guide price £3,495 per person

£3,495 prices are per person based on two sharing on a fully inclusive basis at The Retreat and on a half board basis at Breezes. Upgrade to Baraza Resort & Spa from £1,310 per person.

When to travel

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit. The wildebeest migration happens most of year in Tanzania's Serengeti, and is linked to the rainfall.
